READING PRACTICE
Read and translate the text, pay special attention to the active vocabulary:
Unhealthy lifestyle deals with such filthy habits as: alcoholism, using drugs and smoking.
Smoking is deadly dangerous not only for smokers, but also for non-smokers, who suffer from passive smoking. Tobacco contains nicotine that causes addiction. According to statistics, about 5 million people in the world die every year as a result of smoking.
Alcoholism is the physical and emotional dependence on alcohol. The World Health Organization informs that there are 140 million chronicalcoholics worldwide. 4% of people dying in the world are heavy drinkers. Suicides (50% among adults and 70% among children) are connected with alcohol.
Drugs have become the reality of our life. It is the most dramatic filthy habit. It destroys the mind and social behavior of drug users.
Unhealthy habits have such consequences as: physiological diseases, which ruin the body; mental diseases, which lead to memory and sleep disorders, panic and depression; and also social problems, such as: drunken driving, work conflicts, domestic violence, that leads to loss of employment and family.
The reasons why young people start smoking, drinking or using drugs can be different:
· to look older, cool and independent among new friends,
· to run away from real life, its hardships and duties,
· to copy their parents (researches report that alcoholism can be determined by genetic factors.
60% of heavy drinkers come from families with alcohol problems).
Fortunately, nowadays the attitude to cigarettes, alcohol and drugs has greatly changed in the world. Today, they are not popular any more. But to give up unhealthy habits have never been easy without help.
Anti-filthy habits policies include:
· educational work at school, universities and mass media
· ban on illegal drugs, criminal responsibility for their growing, selling and buying
· ban on smoking and drinking alcohol in public places
· ban on advertising cigarettes, and selling them to children under the age of 18
· high taxes on tobacco and alcohol
· educational work at school, universities and mass media
There is an opinion, that to stop people from drinking alcohol is unrealistic. Alcohol has always been a part of the world’s history. It is not alcohol itself but addiction to alcohol is the problem. So, the task is not to fight against alcohol, but to teach people how to make the right choice: not to drink at all or to drink, but sensibly.
Remember, there is NO WAY to smoking and using drugs!
