1. Douglas Peterson, who was taken prisoner in the Vietnam war after being shot down in a bombing raid, became the first American ambassador to Hanoi.

2. For the first time in 50 years China and Taiwan agreed to allow direct shipping links. Meanwhile the first two F-16 fighters from an order of 150 were delivered to Taiwan, the first American advanced military aircraft to be delivered to the country since 1982.

3. For the seventh successive year a western attempt to censure China for its human record was defeated at the UN Human Rights Commission in Geneva.

4. More than 1,000 troops, mostly from Italy, France and Spain, arrived jn Kamalia to help distribute aid. INDIANAPOLIS – American-born Taliban fighter John Walker Lindh and another Muslim inmate have asked a judge to order a federal prison to allow them and other Muslims in their highly restricted cell block to pray as a group, in accordance with their beliefs. The American Civil Liberties Union last Thursday filed a motion in U.S. District Court in Indianapolis for summary judgment. The ACLU contends there are no disputes over the facts of the case and that the law is on the inmates' side, and asks the judge to rule in their favor.

10. KATMANDU, Nepal – Nepalese investigators have found the flight data recorders from the wreckage of a small plane that crashed last week en route to the Mount Everest area, killing 14 people including six foreigners, officials said Thursday.

11. BEIJING – Rescuers were searching for 44 people missing Thursday after a landslide hit a village in southern China and killed at least four people. Workers rescued 23 people buried under rubble in Wama village in the southwestern province of Yunnan after the rain-triggered landslide hit Wednesday night, the official Xinhua News Agency reported. Rescue efforts could be hindered as the Central Meteorological Station expects more heavy rains through the weekend.
