Writing

Interview one of your parents asking the following questions. Write down the responses.

Did you get any pocket money as a child? What were your duties?

• Did you have any arguments with your parents when you were young?

• How old were you when you started living on your own?

• As you grew up did you start to understand your parents better?

• When was it more difficult to bring me up?

Write a paragraph comparing childhoods of two different time periods.

Read the tips below.

Compare and contrast paragraph

In a compare and contrast paragraph, you write about the similarities and differences between two or more people, places, things, or ideas.

Similarities

Spring weather in Almaty is similar to spring weather in Astana.

Both Almaty and Astana have rain in the spring.

Almaty also has a rainy spring season.

Astana has a rainy spring season, too.

Differences

On the other hand, winter is much colder in Astana.

However, winter is much colder in Astana.

Almaty has a mild winter, but Astana has a cold one.

In contrast to Almaty, Astana has a cold winter.

Astana differs from Almaty by having a cold winter.

While Almaty has a mild winter, Astana has a cold one.

Reading

Write ten sentences comparing and contrasting traditional and modern families.

Traditional families Modern families

Share with a partner your opinion on changes in traditional and modern families. Use the following pattern.

“I think that modern families have changed greatly.”

“So do I.” or

I do not think that modern families are larger than traditional ones.”

“Neither do I.”

If someone says something negative and we agree with them, we can use neither.
If someone says something positive and we agree with them, we can use so.

We must also remember that the verb in the statement needs to agree with the verb in the response:

"I am excited about the party."
"So am I."

The verb you use depends on the tense.
Present simple: I study English. - So do I.
Past simple: I didn't like the film. - Neither did I.
Can: I can play the piano. - So can I.
Past simple with be: I wasn't very interested. - Neither was I.
Present perfect: I've been to Japan. - So have I.

Write correct answers that agree with the following sentences.

I’m a student. – So am I.

I went on vacation last year. -

I didn’t go to the cinema. –

I’ve seen that movie.

I like pizza. –

I’m not watching TV.

I don’t like coffee. –

Correct the mistakes in these sentences.

1) She’s tired and so I am.

2) He isn’t sad so neither am I.

3) He doesn’t speak Chinese and so do I.
