Writing: a short story
Read the following tips. There are a few things that you think about before you start writing.
Setting: Where does it take place? When does it take place?
Where:
- a big city
-Japan, the U.S.A. etc
-in the sea
When:
-In the past, present or future
-During a birthday party
-During a holiday
Characters: How do they/he/she feel? How old is he/she?
Feelings: sad, happy, nervous, excited, sick, tired, athletic etc
Appearance: fat, skinny, short, tall, handsome, cute, ugly, casual etc
Conflict/problem: caught cheating/fell into water/broke something/forgot homework
Development of the story: went to see a doctor/went to the principal/was/were punished
Solution of the problem: regretted and talked it over/got medicine/made promises
End of the story: a story may have a happy or sad ending; never leave a story unfinished.
2. Read the following checklist when you’ve finished your story:
1. Do all the sentences begin with a capital letter?
2. Did you put commas, full stops, question marks and exclamation marks?
3. Are you sure that there are no words missing?
4. Did you use the correct tense throughout the story?
5. Are there adjectives and adverbs to describe people/things?
Use some of these sentence starters: a couple of hours/minutes later, after a while, suddenly, just then, almost immediately, the next morning/day, eventually, at ….o’ clock, finally
