23rd July Dear David, I’m having a fantastic time in New York! The weather’s great. Lots of sunny days and no rain. Our hotel’s quite comfortable, too. We’ve already visited the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) in Harlem, you know... It’s beautiful! Tomorrow we’re planning to go to SOHO, an enclave of artists, and Greenwich Village. I’m really enjoying myself! Wish you were here! Lot’s of love, Ruth.   David Hughes_____ 34 Carlton Court___ Mayfield Road______ Bristol B56 3 QA___ UK_______________

AIRPORT

A good traveler has no fixed plans.

Lao Tzu, Taoist philosopher.

Lead-in

Flight Information (Stage I)

When you arrive at the airport, you first go to Flight Information to check you flight, number of Checking-in desk and Gate number. Passengers are requested to arrive at the airport two hours before departure time on international flights.

Check-in (Stage II)

After that you go to your Checking-in desk. Here you should show your passport, weigh your baggage and hand luggage, and get a boarding card. Passengers must register their tickets, weigh and register their luggage. The economy class limitation is 20 kg. First-class passengers are allowed 30 kg. Excess luggage must be paid for. Hand luggage must be not more than 8 kg. Passengers are permitted to take only some personal things with them into the cabin, such as handbags, umbrellas, coats and souvenirs bought at the tax-free shops at the airport. Each passenger is given a boarding pass to be shown at the departure gate and again to the stewardess when boarding the plane.

Passport Control (Stage III (in Russia)

After checking-in you go to Passport Control. Actually you don’t have to say anything here unless you have any problems with you documents or visa.

Customs (Stage IV)

When passport and visa formalities have been completed, you go to the Customs for an examination of your hand luggage. The passenger is required not to carry these articles: firearms, drugs, in some countries - meat products, fresh fruit and vegetables. You also mustn’t have liquids in your hand luggage. The Customs inspector may ask you to open your bags for inspection in case he sees something prohibited on display. If you have a notebook with you, you have to take it out of your luggage and put into a special box on the line. You also have to put jackets, rims, keys, wallets in boxes. After that you will have a personal control.

Lounge (Stage V)

Then comes a pleasant part of your departure. You are at the lounge. Here you can relax, visit duty-free shops and toilet, have a cup of coffee in a snack bar. But don’t forget to follow the information announcements.

On board (Stage VI)

When you are on board, watch the electric sign flashes in the plane. When the “Fasten Your Seat Belts” sign goes on, do it promptly, and also obey the “No Smoking” signal.

The captain will welcome you on board, tell you all about the flight and the interesting places you are flying over. On board you will be offered a snack or lunch. Do not forget your personal things when leaving the plane.

Passport Control (Stage VII (abroad)

Now you will have Passport Control again. If you travel alone, you should answer some formal questions. Then go to Baggage Claim to take your baggage.
