Royal wedding: «свадебная» лексика

В пятницу 29 апреля 2011 года над Вестминстером громко звонили колокола. Каждый из нас стал свидетелем исторического события: принц Уильям и Кэтрин Миддлтон стали мужем и женой. Восемь лет Уильям и Кейт репетировали семейные отношения, и вот, свершилось. О том, как проходило непосредственно торжество, и в каком наряде пришла на свадьбу Виктория Бекхэм, можно прочитать на просторах сети. Я же подумала о том, что вряд ли в ближайшее время появится более подходящий повод для того, чтобы осветить блок лексики на тему бракосочетания. В связи с чем предлагаю всем заинтересованным сосредоточиться, вооружиться ручками-блокнотами-iPadами и постараться запомнить то, что я изложу ниже. Итак, поговорим о том, как проходит свадебная церемония в Англии.

Всё начинается с предложения (proposal). В красивом сценарии мужчина обычно встаёт на одно колено (the man goes down on one knee), чтобы сделать предложение (to pop the question).

Если женщина отвечает «да», молодые люди считаются помолвленными (to be engaged). Принято, чтобы помолвочное кольцо (engagement ring) своей невесте (fiancee) покупал мужчина. Зачастую это кольцо с бриллиантом (diamond ring). Период помолвки (engagement) может длиться годы, и если никто из пары (couple) не расторгает помолвку (tobreakofftheengagement), следующий этап — брак (marriage).

Большинство свадеб (weddings) в Великобритании осуществляются либо в ЗАГСе (Registry Office), либо в церкви (church). Первая церемония называется гражданской (civilceremony), вторая – «белой свадьбой» (whitewedding). Безусловно, существует ряд иных церемоний, в зависимости от вероисповедания. Если пара предпочитает церемонию в церкви, то нужно всё заранее заказать (tobook), определиться с набором услуг, разместить цветы (toarrangeflowers). Помимо этого, в процессе подготовки как к гражданской, так и к традиционной церемониям, важно составить список приглашённых (to draw up a guest list ), выслать приглашения ( tosend out invitations), забронировать место, где будет происходить празднование после церемонии (tobooka reception venue), выбрать подруг невесты (to choose bridesmaids) и свидетеля/шафера ( thebestman ), купить свадебное платье ( tobuy the wedding dress ), организовать медовый месяц ( to arrange a honeymoon), составить ( tocompile ) так называемый wedding list, т.е. список желаемых подарков, ну и, конечно же, выбрать обручальные кольца ( toselect the wedding rings).

В день свадьбы ( thebigday) первыми в церковь приезжают жених (groom) и свидетель (best man). Затем приезжают гости (thentheguestsarrive). Последней приезжает невеста, обычно в длинном белом свадебном платье (normallydressedinalongwhiteweddingdress) со шлейфом (withatrain). Лицо её скрытовуалью (her face covered in a veil), в руках она держит букетик цветов (to carrya bouquet of flowers). У подруг невесты одинаковые платья (matching dresses).

Обычно отец невесты (bride'sfather) ведёт её по проходу между рядами в церкви (walksherdowntheaisle) пока они не дойдут до священника, стоящего у алтаря (untiltheyreachthepriestatthealtar). Церковный орг á н играетсвадебный марш (the church organ plays the Wedding March), и все гости встают (the guests rise to their feet). Отец доводит дочь до алтаря, она встаёт рядом с женихом, и начинается церемония бракосочетания. Церемония длится около получаса и включает в себя чтение отрывков из Библии (extractsfromtheBible) и несколько религиозных песен (religioussongs) – так называемых гимнов (hymns). Священник всегда спрашивает, есть ли возражения на вступление пары в брак (objections to the marriage). В конце церемонии пара обменивается кольцами (toexchangerings) и провозглашается «мужем и женой» (tobeproclaimed"manandwife"). Теперь муж может поцеловать жену (the husband is allowed to kiss his wife). Гости расходятся, а пара расписывается в специальном журнале (themarriageregister). Когда молоды выходят из церкви, гости часто бросают конфетти (theguestsoftenthrowconfetti), а фотограф делает качественные снимки (thephotographertakesformalphotos).

Затем следует свадебное торжество (weddingreception), которое обычно представляет собой официальный обед в отеле. Многие произносят речь (to give a speech), поздравляют молодых.

В конце торжества счастливая пара (happycouple) обычно отправляется в свадебное путешествие (toleaveonhoneymoon).

Sex and dating terms

There is a relationship hierarchy to help to understand what each stage of the relationship is. Single is a commitment level of 0 and marriage is a commitment level of 7.

Level 1 - acquaintances

Acquaintances - An acquaintance is someone that you have just met. You may have met them through a friend or at a party, but you don't have any sort of relationship with them yet.

Level 2 - hanging out

Hanging out -This means that you are spending time together with someone just as friends. It is not necessarily a dating term because you can hang out with anyone.

Someone might ask "Are you dating this girl?", and the response could be "No, we're just hanging out. Nothing has happened, yet." This can either lead to a friendship or dating

Level 3 - hooking up

Hooking up - Sleeping with each other, fooling around, no strings attached.

Level 4 - seeing someone

Seeing each other - A step up from hooking up, which usually involves some dates here and there too (progress). This guy is in a fairly casual relationship with you. All the fun off having a boyfriend/girlfriend, but no change to facebook relationship status.

Seeing each other means that a girl and a boy spend time together and do stuff together but not officially dating. For men it's believed that during this period of seeing each other they want to figure out if they want to have a relationship. For women they believe they are just getting to know each other.

Level 5 - official

Official -If you and your man are official, he is telling everyone. No seriously honey, everyone. From his parents, friends, and work colleagues, to the gas station attendant who fills his car to his barber to, well, anyone who will listen. He wants to make it known that you are his other half and would scream it on top of the mountain if there was one close enough. Once you are official, you are at a point where you see a future together. You're committed to each other sexually, and mentally as well. The official relationship status is also known as 'going out' and/or 'boyfriend and girlfriend.' But just because you two have now declared your infatuation with one another to the world, don't drop the ball. Relationships take work, and you're up to bat.

Level 6 - dating

Dating - He calls you regularly, you make a set plan and he wines you and dines you (or at least the college equivalent) as you chat the night away trying to get to know each other beneath the surface. Dating is a term that is just slightly more serious than going out, and the couple is hopefully exclusive at this point.

Level 7 - married

Married - So now after all of these steps you're finally married.

Then I listen to music, watch television or read books. 1 am fond of reading. I prefer historical novels. Some detective stories are very interesting too. It is considered that detective stories can t be regarded as the real literature. I don't agree with this. Everything depends on the skill and gift of the writer. I don't go in for sport regularly. But if I have a possibility, I go to the swimming pool. I also like to play different ball games such as volleyball, basketball. I am a school leaver now. I have good marks. I am going to enter the university. Our teachers say I am good at Literature. It seems to me that in fact I have some attitude for it. My parents think that after graduating from the university it will be difficult to find a job I'll be trained for. But as for me it's early to discuss this question. The most important thing now is to pass the entrance exams well and to enter the university.

My name is Lena. I’m 15. I live in Moscow with my parents and my younger sister Anya. I also have a grandma and a grandpa, but they don’t live with us. My father is a teacher of Russian language in the Moscow State University and my mum doesn’t work, she is a housewife. My sister is quite a nice girl but sometimes she can be a nightmare. I love my family.
I study in a Moscow school in the 8th form. To tell you the truth my school life isn’t very easy. I like literature, but chemistry and physics are very difficult for me. Every day we have about six lessons or more, after that I feel really exhausted. However twice a week I go in for sports. My dream is to be a professional tennis player and I do my best to achieve this goal. I have some friends at school. Sometimes we gather together just to drink Cola, have a chat and play PC games. My best friends are Paul and Kate. We live in the same house and study in the same form, so we see each other every single day.
At my leisure time I read books and watch TV. My favorite books and movies are science-fiction stories. I like Bradbury, King,Nikitin and Sheckley. Sometimes I try to write myself, and then I show my stories to close friends. On Sundays my sister and I visit our grandparents. My granny cooks fantastic cakes and my grandpa tells us exciting stories about his youth.

As to my hobbies I collect all things with cats. They are wonderful animals and I hope one day my parents will permit me to have a real cat. Now there are about fifty items in my collection. Among them there are small figures, stamps, DVDs about cats and the big poster on the wall. My sister lives in the same room. As soon as she is fond of music there are also many posters with her favorite singers.

Most of all I like summer vacations. The weather is warm and there are no school lessons at all! In the middle of summer my family goes abroad. My parents prefer Egypt and Bulgaria. I adore swimming in the sea and sunbathing. It’s a pity we stay there only for a week or two, I wish one day I could stay there forever.

They have much in common, but their views on music, films, books and sports are rather different. For example, my mother is fond of classical music, but my father is not. He prefers the same kind of music that I do. He likes rock. My mother doesn't like action or horror films. But my father does. My father likes detective stories, but mum prefers historical novels. My father is fond of tennis and my mother doesn't go in for sports.

My grandparents are already pensioners, but they are still full of life and energy. I have many relatives — aunts, uncles, cousins. Some of them live in our city. But the others live far from us. But we try not to miss a chance of seeing each other. They often stay with us during holidays. Or either we go to see them.

I am fond of reading books on history and fiction. I am going in for sports. I like playing football, basketball and chess. Especially I am good at chess. I take part in different chess competitions and tournaments.

In a year I shall finish my school and I have to decide what to do: either to apply for a job or for a study. Actually I study well and make some progress in liberal arts subjects. I am particularly interested in History, Literature and languages. So I am going to enter the University. I am planning to become a teacher of History and to work in my school.

Let me introduce myself. My full name is Oleg Olegovitch Orlov. I have been named after my father and I am very happy about it. I was born on May 3, 1991 in Volgograd. I descend from the family of the office-workers. I am the only child in the family. My father is a doctor, he works at a hospital. My mother is a housewife.

I am a pupil of the eleventh form of a secondary school. I want to enter the University of Volgograd. That is why I have to study twice as hard as an ordinary pupil. I do not only do my best at school, I take a preparatory course at the University. My favourite subject at school is Literature. My teacher of Literature is an well-educated man with broad outlook and deep knowledge of the subject. He teaches us to understand Russian classics, to appreciate the language and style. He also encourages me in my desire to enter the Philological Department of the Volgograd University. Whether I shall be a teacher or a researcher we shall know later on. I am always very busy, but when I am free I am fond of reading books and I am fond of sports. I've got the first category in volleyball and have many friends among sportsmen, but my best friend is Paul.

I like to travel. My parents and I have visited many ancient Russian towns. I am on friendly terms with my parents. I am very happy.

I cannot say that I have a lot of spare time because it takes me much time to get ready for my exams to the University and learning exams at school. But nevertheless I find a spare minute to have a rest and do what I want and like. I have a computer and I can get a lot of information and songs from the Internet. I can sit hours and hours communicating with my friends through the Internet. As far as the music goes I like listening to the German group Rammstein and other groups of this type. I like Russian and foreign pop-music, too. Sometimes I read books and magazines. I like detective stories. From time to time I watch TV but I do it only when I eat because I have not so much free time. All information I need I get from the Internet. Sometimes I help my parents about the house – I do some work in the kitchen-garden, feed our poultry and animals. Very seldom I travel to the mountains with my friends to get some fresh air and forget about my problems.

My name is Inga. I`m ten years old, and I live with my family. There are five of us: Mum, Dad, my grandmother, my sister and me. My Dad`s name is Boris. He`s forty-three years old. He is very kind. He is generous, warm-hearted and lively. Dad is tall and has got short dark hair and blue eyes. He is very handsome. My Mum`s name is Ann. She is thirty-six. She has got long dark hair and dark eyes. She is very friendly and has got a good sense of humour. Mum is very beautiful. She looks after the house and takes care of all of us. My sister Ann is twelve. She is at school. She is in the sixth form. Sheis kind and friendly.
My Granny is retired. She helps Mum to take care of the family. My Granny cooks very well. All of us try to help her. She likes to surprise us with little unexpected gifts. We all get together for holidays, weddings, birthdays and other celebrations. We love each other dearly and help each other. We are a happy family!
I study in the fourth form. My school is quite big. There are many pupils in our school. We like our school very much. My classes begin at half past eight in the morning and end at half past one in the afternoon.
All pupils learn some foreign languages - English, German or French. I learn English. I have three English classes a week - on Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. At the lessons we check our homework. We ask and answer questions, read English texts and translate sentences both from Russian into English and from English into Russian. We speak English, of course.

He has a very responsible work. He helps people. He is seldom at home because he has a lot of work, but we know that he loves us. To my mind, my father is the best man I have ever met. MY FAMILY

Meet my family. There are five of us, and we are very friendly. First, meet my mum and dad, Elena and Vladimir. They both love cooking. My mum enjoys embroidering and my dad enjoys playing with my brother Lukasha and my sister Anna. My mum is slim and good-looking. She has got short dark hair and brown eyes. Her nose is small. My mother is a doctor and she is very clever. My father is a doctor, too. He is tall and handsome. He has got short dark hair and green eyes. He is kind and quite serious. Here is my brother Lukasha. He is only 3, but he is very clever for his age. He is very cute, too. He is got blonde hair and blue eyes. He is fond of playing with his toys. My sister`s name is Anna. She is 6 months. She is a beautiful and nice baby. She hardly speaks any Russian, but she is eager to take City and Guilds exams. I think Level A1 is just for her. My name is Lisa. I have got long dark hair and brown eyes. I like riding a bike and swimming. My hobby is figure skating. As you see, we are a very - very interesting family!

My name is Ilya. I am ten. I go to school. I am a good pupil because I always do my homework and get exсellуnt marks. I have got a family. It is big and friendly. There are four members in my family. They are my mum, dad, brother and me. I have got a mum. Her name is Lena. She is thirty-five. My mum is clever and kind. She is a housewife. My mum is good at cooking. Every day she cleans the rooms, washes the dishes and doesn`t let my brother and me fight.I have got a father. His name is Dima. My father is handsome and serious. He is very busy and works a lot. My father is fond of playing computer games. At the weekends we play games together. Also, he helps me with my homework and my mum with housework. He is the best dad in the world! My younger brother is two. His name is Vanya. He looks like my dad. Vanya is strong, clever and talented. He can swim and run. Vanya likes watching cartoons on TV. Sometimes he is naughty. He enjoys breaking my toy cars and drawing in my exercise-books. I wish I were two too. I love my family. I am happy!

MY FAMILY

I think, every person always dreams about the place where he can speak about his problems, chat with close friends, where he can feel happy and quiet. For me it is my family and my home. It is the best place in the world and my dearest people live here.
My family is not large we are 4. I have a father, a mother and a brother. We all live together in a new flat. My father is 45. He is a tall and well-built man with short black hair and grey eyes. He is quiet and hardworking. Really, he is a bread maker of the family. Dad is handy with many things. His hobby is fixing everything at home. My mother is very lively. She is life and soul of the family. She is a pleasant woman of forty with beautiful chestnut hair and dark brown eyes. She is a lofty ideal for me.
My parents have been married for 20 years they have much in common, in everyday life Dad is impractical and needs mother to look after him. Parents have different views on music, books, films. For example, my father likes horror films. My father is a football fan and Mum doesn't like sports. But they try to have the same opinion about the education and upbringing of their children. My brother is only 11. He goes to school. He is funny and curious. He is constantly asking many questions often silly ones. But this only a moment - I can't imagine my life without our little monster. We all feel happy when we are together.
In the evenings we often have little gatherings in the kitchen by the cup of tea, chatting, laughing and discussing the events of the day. Those evening are the best of all. But sometimes I have problems with my parents. They don't like the clothes I wear the music I listen to and the friends I bring home. It's not easy to be a teenager. In summer I visit my Granny. I love her when I was a child she used to tell me fairytales and stories of her life. My parents are hardworking. They combine work with housekeeping. Mum manages our household very well. We all are in the habit of helping her to run the house. Our relatives and friends like to come to our place. My parents are very hospitable everybody feels at home in their flat.

MY LIFE

My name is Denis. My surname is Ivanov. I live in Russia, in Astrakhan. Astrakhan is very old, but it`s a beautiful city. There is the Kremlin in our town. In the Kremlin there are seven towers, it has the pentagon form. In the old times all city was in the territory of the Kremlin, and around the river Volga. The river Volga is very beautiful, a lot of fish in it. I like to fish. Sometimes my family and I go fishing. My family is my mum, my father and my brother. My brother is 4 years. His name is Dima. He is very cheerful and noisy. I have a grandmother, a grandfather and a great-grandmother. I like to visit them. My great-grandmother was at the Second World War. She hasa lot of medals. She is very kind and fair. She bakes tasty pies. I have got a cat. It`s name is Gerda. Gerda likes to sleep. She is fluffy and can purring. My birthday is on October, 31st. I am 10 years. This year I had a birthday party at the caf?. There we ate pizza, and then played. We had a beautiful birthday cake. Ten candles burned on the cake. My friends presented me many gifts: books, games. My birthday party was cheerful and funny. I study in Lyceum number two. I like to study there very much. In our Lyceum teachers are kind and good, and in my class I have many friends. I like to read books. My favorite books are: "Harry Potter`s" and "Stalker". I like to play the computer. On Saturdays and Sundays my family and I go to the cinema or walk, and in summer in parks and on beaches. We spend weekends well.
In summer I usually visit many interesting places. This summer I was in the city of Pyatigorsk. We went on excursions, were in the Museum of Butterflies and drank mineral water. We went on excursion to Kabardino-Balkaria by the bus. I visited Elbrus, the highest mountain. It was fine, but cold. It`s very interesting to see snow in summer. We were on Blue Lake. Water was blue and pure there. Then we visited a Thermal Lake. The lake had warm water. It` s medical. Even this summer I went to the sanatorium in the city of Gelendzhik. It`s near the Black sea. I had a rest and was treated. We went to swim in the sea every day. It`s very beautiful there - the warm sea and the bright sun.
