Притяжательный падеж имен существительных

1.2.1. Падеж – грамматическая категория существительного, с помощью которой выражаются отношения между словами в предложении. Форма притяжательного падежа образуется с помощью апострофа и аффикса - s у существительных в единственном числе и у существительных, множественное число, которых образуется не по правилам, например: the government’ s decision, the children’ s toys.

Притяжательный падеж существительных, множественное число которых образуется по правилам, выражается путем присоединения только апострофа: my parent s ' house.

Следует запомнить правила правописания форм притяжательного падежа греческих имен собственных, состоящих из двух или более слогов:

Socrate s ’ [′sokrəti: z] dicta,

Xerxe s’ [′zə: ksi: z] soldiers,

Sophocle s ’ [′sofəkli: z] Antigone

Многие другие имена собственные, заканчивающиеся на звонкий согласный обычно имеют двойное написание:

Burn s ’ [bə: nz] poetry – Burns ’s [′bə: nzi: z] poetry

Dicken s ’ [′dikinz] novels – Dickens ’s [′dikinzi:s] novels

В форме притяжательного падежа обычно употребляются одушевленные существительные: the policemen 's cards, my sister 's photo.

Форму притяжательного падежа также имеют некоторые неодушевленные существительные:

· географические названия, обозначающие континенты, страны, штаты, города: Europe 's future, Russia 's interests, Main 's animals, Moscow 's museums;

· существительные, обозначающие учреждения: the school 's traditions, the University 's rules;

· темпоральные и дистантные существительные: a week 's absence, three day s' leave, a mile ’s distance, three kilometre s’ cross-country race;

· существительные, обозначающие средства передвижения и их составляющие: the warship 's crew, the speedometer 's hand;

· существительные, обозначающие политические, экономические, социальные, культурные и спортивные явления: television 's addiction, a word 's importance;

· существительные, входящие в состав устойчивых выражений: a pin 's head, at one 's finger 's end, in one 's mind 's eye, at one 's wit s' end, at arm 's length, at death 's door, a needle 's point, at a stone 's throw, within a hair 's breadth of something, for appearance 's sake, duty 's call, etc.

1.2.2. Групповой притяжательный падеж. В данном случае в притяжательном падеже стоит не одно существительное, а группа слов:

· в сочинительных словосочетаниях: a month or so 's holidays, Bob and Ann 's room (комната Боба и Анны).

Исключение: Byron 's and Keats 's poetry (поэзия Байрона и поэзия Китса);

· в именных словосочетаниях типа: the teacher of math 's study, the major of Moscow 's project, the Duke of Wellington 's Regime; this lady I-don ' t-remember-her-name 's bag, Mister as-awful-as-the-beast 's remark.

1.2.3. Абсолютный притяжательный падеж используется:

· чтобы избежать повтора главного слова: He carried his heavy bag, but he decided to take Nancy 's to help her;

· для обозначения фирм, магазинов, больниц, учреждений, соборов и храмов: at the baker 's, at St. Basil 's, MacDonald 's.

4. The preparation of the Micmac's food was recorded in the 17^th century by Nicholas Denys.

5. At Mr. Jordan's the toasts, after the usual manner, were the twelve sachem chiefs of the twelve tribes, who were general friends and allies of the English.

6. Other entertainment consisted of such summer diversions as picnics and chowder parties on McNab's Island, while in winter, skating parties formed on the North West Arm and the famous Tandem Club had its sleigh drives.
