Getting around the city

Getting around the city on public transportation in the U.S. is generally not so easy as it is in most other countries, but it is possible. Only a few cities have subways, but most towns of 50,000 or more have some kind of city bus service. The public transportation in the U.S. is expensive. There are several ways to pay for bus transportation in the city. In some cities you drop your money into the fare box. You also can buy tickets from a conductor or pay the driver. In others, you have to buy tickets before you get on the bus. In some you can buy a special pass to be used for the day, week or month. In case you are gotng change to another bus, you won't have to pay another fare on that bus if you have a transfer. Fares are not fixed, but are roportional to the distance travelled. The longer distance you ravel the higher the fare is.

If you can't get where you want to by bus or subway, you can always take a cab. The meter will show the amount you ave to pay. The driver will usually expect a tip of at least 15%. In New York, cabs are everywhere on the streets.

A car rental advertisement you will find in a phone book if au look under Car Rentals in the Yellow Pages. In order to ent a car, you have to have a major credit card, such as aster Card or Visa. Without a credit card you may have to pay very high deposite on the car. If you rent a car, ask the ornpany what to do in case your car breaks down. Some cornpanies will ask you to call a special number. Others will want to have the car repaired. They will deduct the cost of the epair from your bill.

When driving in the U.S., it's a good idea to have an International Driver's License. There is a national speed limit of 55 miles per hour, or about 80 kilometers per hour. Americans usually start and stop slowly. They usually stop for people who are walking to let them cross the street. On some roads there may be a minimum speed.
