During the flight some passengers may feel bad that’s why Cabin Attendants must be well trained to administer first aid on board.

The most common cases of medical emergencies are heart attack, injures, asthma and allergic reaction.

The heart attack is the leading cause of in-flight death and the leading cause of diversions. Drugs kits include aspirin to keep the blood flowing when there is a chest pain. Defibrillators are used to restart heart.

Diversions are also caused by injuries to passengers. Items falling from overhead bins can cause head injuries, while turbulence can easily result in broken bones. Drugs Kits are equipped with splints and bandage to stabilize limbs and plasters for minor cuts.

Dangerous breathing problems can result from allergic reaction. Most carry EPI pens to prevent anaphylactic shock.

Each flight CAs must carry at least one sealed metal box, which is known as First Aid kit. It contains scalpel, a wide range of dressings, splints and syringe. Iodine, Ammonia, scissors are included in the First Aid Kit.

Each flight cabin attendants must carry five drugs kits on board. They typically contain different medicines in pills, drops and tablets. There are antitoxic, sedative, stomachic, fever-lowering and tablets, nose drops, plasters and tights.

The purser must be consulted before breaking a seal of drugs kits. In any case of medical treatment a purser should be informed by the cabin attendant of patient’s condition.

The cabin is divided into several areas for the purpose of pre-flight checks, and the purser designates the CA responsible for each area. The Cabin Attendant completes the check using a check list.

All Movable Safety Equipment must be checked by CAs before flight, and this would normally include:

Dry chemical and water fire extinguishers are used to fight fire. We check that the seals are intact and extinguishers are not expired for use.

We check oxygen bottles for air tightness.They are used to provide oxygen in an emergency.

The unmovable oxygen system is used by the Flight Crew when lacking oxygen.

Smoke hoods (portable breathing equipment) are used to protect CAs from smoke when extinguishing fire.

Fire axes are used if exits are jammed or to crash bulkheads in case of smoldering fire.

We check megaphone by squeezing a trigger. It’s used to speak to passenger in an emergency.

A ELT beacon is used to transmit the position of the aircraft after emergency landing or ditching.
Life-vests for adults, children life vests, baby survival cots and slides are used for emergency ditching.

Evacuation slides such as inflatable slides, off-wing slides, life lines are used to leave the aircraft after emergency landing.

CAs should also check cabin attendant stations. Crew life vests, fire extinguishers, smoke hoods, oxygen block key, biohazard kit, flashlights, safety information cards must be present and complete. They check the pressure in the operating systems of each emergency exit.

Having completed the Check, CA reports a purser that all items of emergency equipment are present and complete.

Should the cabin pressure fall, oxygen masks will drop down automatically from the overhead stowage. Pull the nearest mask down to start the flow of the oxygen. Press it over your mouth and nose, secure it as we are demonstrating and breathe normally. Put on your own mask before helping others.

Your oxygen mask is in the unit above your seat. In case of decompression it will appear automatically. When you see the mask, pull down the mask and place it firmly over your nose and mouth.
