Street children

 Street children are particularly exposed to arbitrary arrest and thus to ill-treatment

Unaccompanied children are especially vulnerable and at risk of neglect, violence, military recruitment, sexual assault and other abuses

 Although the term can be used pejoratively, some street children and their representative organizations use it with pride.

Since their entrance into the policy arena and the Scheme was set in place, street children have been included in some other policies and programmes as well.

Street children in many developing countries are a high risk group for substance misuse, in particular solvent abuse.

Many street children in Latin America, who either live or work in the streets of developing countries, are impoverished. Although most are still in contact with their families, almost all street children spend a significant portion of their days working on the streets for money. Some studies claim that as many as 45% of children in Latin America are street children, 75–90% of whom are home-based. Most female street children and some male home-based street children work on the streets with their parents or siblings, selling food and candy Home-based street children can emerge when families in desperate economic situations send their children to seek work on the streets Additionally, street children usually come from female-headed households. As street children must provide for themselves, work is a very important aspect of their lives. Because of the low pay from employers, street children in India often choose to be self-employed or work multiple jobs. Street children in India are frequently exposed to abuse and extortion. Abuse by the Indian police is often reported by street children. Street children differ in age, gender, ethnicity, social class, and these children have had different experiences throughout their lifetimes. Street children are especially vulnerable and become victims of sexual exploitation. Although these conditions and diseases are treatable, many street children do not have access to medical care. Some street children report the police—not hunger or loneliness—as their greatest fear Street children in Sweden, especially boys from Morocco, are vulnerable to child sex trafficking and forced criminality. It is only the young children, the waifs and strays, who are not looked after.
