Startinga Duel

Aspell duelisaformofcombat, butunlikeordinarycombat, theparticipantsmustallagreetowillinglyenterthe dueland abidebyitsrules. Ifeithersideсломать stherules, itisconsidered theloserofthe duel, regardlessofanyotheroutcome, and ifitsmemberscontinueaggressiveaction, thefightreturnstothestandard rulesforcombat.

Therulesfora duelbetweenspellcastersareusuallyverysimple, butcanbechanged and altered bytheparticipants, solongasbothsidesagree. Such discussionstypicallyhappenbeforethe duel, allowingbothsidestoproperlyprepare, butaswithallelementsofa duel, thisisnotalwaysthecase. Most duelsutilizethefollowingsimplerules.

· Eachparticipantmustfightaloneandcanreceivenohelpfromoutsidesources, withtheexceptionofфамильярыorotherbonded creatures.

· EachparticipantmustfightwithМагии.Theuseofmeleeorranged weaponsisforbidden, withtheexceptionofbonded objectsand weaponsthatcancastspells, suchasstaves.

· Theuseofsummoned orotherwiseconjured creaturesisforbidden, unlessthe duelexpectssuchcreaturestocombatoneanotheratthebehestoftheparticipants (ratherthan directlyattackingtheдуэльноеopponent). Thissortofcreature dueliscommonamongдруидs, призывательs, and conjurers.

• The duellastsuntiloneofthecastershasbeenknockedбез сознанияorotherwiseprevented fromcontinuing. DuelCombat

A duelfunctionsmuchlikeordinarycombat, withafewnotableexceptionsthatmakeforamoreexcitingand challengingencounter.

Atthestartofthe duel, eachparticipantmakesaninitiativecheck, justlikeinstandard combat. Because duelsarealwaysplanned and expected, thereisneverasurpriseround. Alternatively, some duelsstartoffwitheachsidefacingoff,waitingfortheothertoflinchorсломать Решимости. Whenaдуэльноеopponenttriestocastaspell, thetargeted spellcastercanmakeaКолдовствоcheck (СЛ 15 + thespell’slevel) asaсвободное действие. Ifthechecksucceeds, sheidentifiesheropponent’sspelland canattemptaдуэльноеcounter. Ifitfails, shecannotattemptaдуэльноеcounteragainstthatspell.

Unlikewhenusingatruecounterspellaction (whichrequiresareadied action), evenexpendinganexactcopyofthespellbeingcast doesnotguaranteesuccess. Thecasterattemptingthecounterspellreceivesabonusorpenaltyonhercheck dependinguponthelevelofthespellslotexpendedand theexactspellused, asnoted inTable 2–3. Ifthecheckissuccessful, thespelliscountered—itisnegated and thespellislost.
