ABOUT MYSELF.

First of all let me introduce myself. My name is Nataliya, Natasha for short. Alexandrovna is my patronymic and Lebedeva is my surname. So my full name is NataliyaAlexandrovnaLebedeva though, of course, it sounds rather pompous for a girl of my age. I was born in Belgorod on the 21-st of March in 1979. My astrological zodiac sign is:

Aries /March 21 – April 20/

Taurus /April 21 – May 20/

Gemini /May 21 – June 21/

Cancer /June 22 – July 22/

Leo /July 23 – August 23/

Virgo /August 24 – September 23/

Libra /September 24 – October 23/

Scorpio /October 24 – November 22/

Sagittarius /November 23 – December 21/

Capricorn /December 22 – January 20/

Aquarius /January 21 – February 20/

Pisces /February 21 – March 20/ (also called the Fish)

As I am only 17, my biography is lacking in interesting facts and achievements.

I learned reading before I was six, and that helped me greatly when I entered school. I’ve never had any trouble in learning. I’d like to say that I was a good pupil, I have always been interested in History, Literature, Mathematics and English.

Now I am a first-year student of Belgorod State University. I study at the … Faculty.

I’d like to say that I have a friend. His /her/ name is…. We live in the same block of flats.

I have some hobbies. But I have more hobbies and interests than I have time for. By the way I enjoy listening to music, I love folk music and dance. Besides, I like cooking and baking. I like to travel. My parents and I have already visited many ancient Russian towns.

Reading is one of my passions. I gulp down books by dozens. My favourite writers are Pushkin, Lermontov, Kuprin, Alexey Tolstoy, Byron and Shelly. Sometimes I read adventure stories, detectives, spy thrillers, science fiction. It depends on many factors: my mood, season of the year, the weather, and so on.

Photography (music, drawing, painting, collecting computer games, collecting stamps, collecting coins, gardening) is something else I’m very interested in.

Now a few words about my family. Our family is a big one. My parents have two more children besides me. Thus I have got an elder brother and a younger sister. My sister Helen is 12. She is a pretty round-faced and blue-eyed girl with golden hair which she wears short. My brother Igor is 6 years senior /junior/. He is married and has a wife and 2 children: a son and a daughter. My nephew and niece are lovely little kids.

My parents are not old at all. My father is a middle-aged person. In my opinion he is a handsome man of medium height. My father is a doctor. He is a well-known specialist in his sphere of medicine.

My mother is a good-looking woman. She is thirty-nine but she doesn’t look her age. She is kind and gentle. My mother is a book-keeper. Besides, she is good at cooking, excellent at sewing and knitting. She has got a brilliant sense of humour and it certainly adds up to her charm. My mother does the house-work, but we all always try to help her as much as possible.

I have many relatives. My aunts, uncles, cousins and second cousins live in different parts of Russia. My grandparents are pensioners. To my regret they live in the country quite far away and I don’t see them very often. But on holidays my relatives often come to our place. We are happy to be together.

MY DAY OFF

On my day off I am not so quick to leave my bed. As a rule I get up at 10. I run to the window and open it wide to let the fresh air in. I do my morning exercises. It makes me feel fit and sets me into a cheerful mood.

Then I make my bed and go to the bathroom. On my day off, when I am not short of time, I prefer to take a bath. Then I have breakfast that my mother cooks. We like gathering for meal on Sunday morning. Breakfast, as doctors say, must be the most substantial meal of the day and on Sunday I stick to this advice. I have a really good breakfast. I drink a glass of juice, eat apples or bananas. Then I eat scrambled eggs with ham and salad. If it is my turn I clear away the dishes and wash them.

After breakfast I help my mother about the house, sometimes we do the shopping or go to the supermarket. It takes me two hours more to be ready with my homework.

Well, and I am free at last! I am good mixer so I have a lot of friends. On my day off we usually get together and have a good time. In the daytime if it is winter we go either skiing or skating. If I have time I always go to the swimming pool. In the evening we may go to the theatre or to the cinema. My friends and I are really fond of both classical and modern music, which has been really affected by the Beatles, the Queen.

I am not a TV addict. Reading is my favorite occupation. I like to read both Russian and foreign writers. My favourite Russian writers are Leskov and Tolstoy, foreign – Shakespeare and Gugo. I read books in Russian but hope that soon I’ll be able to read English writers in the original.

On my day off my family and I do our best to spend as little time in kitchen as possible. So we like to have our midday meal out. In fact we don’t visit expensive restaurant. We have meals at a café and do it as often as we can afford it.

I like my weekends and I am always looking forward to meeting my friends so that we can go to the theatre or cinema together or go for a walk and have a nice chat.

My working day.

You know what I do every day? A lot! My working day starts early in the morning. I get up at 7 o’clock, open the window, do my morning exercises, make my bed, put on my dressing gown and slippers and go to the bathroom. I wash my face and neck, clean my teeth, or have a bath or a shower. I do my hair and go back to my room; I dress myself. After that I go to the kitchen to have breakfast. As I stay at University till 15.30, I have a substantial breakfast. Usually I eat fruit (a banana or an apple) and porridge and drink a cup of tea/coffee with sandwiches (bread and butter, cheese). After breakfast I put on my hat and coat, take my bag and leave for University.

As I study at BelgorodStateUniversity, my double-periods start at half past eight. So actually I must leave at ten minutes to eight. It takes me 40 minutes to get to the University.

As a rule I have three or four double-periods a day: History, Mathematics, English and so on. I like to know much new during the lectures. I’m very fond of…. and …. that is why I spend much time reading books on these subjects. After that I go to the library to read additional material. So, as you can see, I’m busy as a bee.

At 13.35 we have a break. My group-mates and I go to the canteen to have a bite.

I return home at 16.30, have dinner. I cook myself. I have some soup for the first course, meat and potato and salads for the main course and some fruit-juice or stewed fruit for dessert. After dinner I rest a little and continue my studying: I do my home task, read lectures and prepare for seminars. Two times a week we have English so I have to work hard at my English. I learn rules and new words and do exercises, read texts and translate them.

I always have some spare time in the evening to read for pleasure or to go out for a walk.

At eight I go for a walk with my friends. We like going across the streets and in the park, or chatting in the café. Sometimes I go to the theatre or to the cinema. I like to watch TV, too.

Late at night I feel tired and sleepy.

I usually go to bed at 11 o’clock.

BELGOROD

Belgorod is my native town. It is one of the oldest towns in Russia. It has a long and interesting history, which dates back to the ancient times. People settled on the Seversky Donets river in the Stone and Bronze Ages. Belgorod is first mentioned in theannals of history in the 10th century.

Originally it was a very small settlement of Slavs atop the chalky hill overlooking the Seversky Donets. The White Hill gave its name to the future fortress town.

In 1596, under Tsar Fyodor Ioanovich, a fortress was built on the south boundary of the Russian State. The Russian army chiefs Princes Michael Nosdrevaty and Andrew Volkonsky founded the fortress «whitetown». It was of great strategic importance as it repulsed the attacks of the nomads. The people of Whitetown were occupied with fishing and hunting.

After the Polish and Lithuanian invasion, which took place at the beginning of the 17th century, Belgorod was destroyed and all its wooden buildings were burnt.

In 1626 the new fortress of Belgorod was built on the left bank of the Seversky Donets, opposite the old site. It should be noted that the new site of the fortress was rather inconvenient: it was low and swampy. In spring the floods did great damage to the wooden buildings, which became rotten.

During the reign of tsar Michael Romanov the noblemen N.T. Odoevsky and V.P. Sheremetjev were sent to find a new site for the fortress of Belgorod. The building of the new fortress on the right bank of the river began in 1650. It was situated between the rivers – the Seversky Donets and the Vselitsa. Belgorod had been built by 1651 under the supervision of the army chief Prince B.A. Repnin.

Gradually Belgorod grew stronger and stronger and in 1727 became the chief administrative center of the region comprising the Belgorod, the Oryol, and the Kursk provinces. Belgorod has changed its status several times in the course of centuries. In 1954 Belgorod became the center of the Belgorod region, separate from Kursk region.

A new page in the history of Belgorod was opened with the revolutionary movement spreading in Russia. The Civil War was a hard period in the life of the Belgorod district.

On June 22, 1941, the Great Patriotic War broke out. The fascist invaders came twice to occupy Belgorod in the course of three years. For the first time Belgorod was occupied on October 25, 1941, after a heavy battle at the village of Streletskoye in which the Red Army was defeated. In 1943 fascists returned to Belgorod. The victory in the battle of Kursk Bulge was of the great importance as it was a turning point in the Great Patriotic War.

On August 5, 1943, Moscow fired a salute in honour of the liberation of Belgorod and Oryol for the first time during the war years. The Kursk Bulge Diorama Museum was opened in the center of Belgorod on August 3, 1987 to commemorate the battle of Kursk Bulge.

Nowadays Belgorod is one of the administrative, industrial and cultural centers of the Russian Federation, in the South of the Black Earth Zone. Since 1954 it has been a regional center of the Belgorod region. So there are some museums, educational buildings, plants, factories, libraries and entertaining centers.

There is Land Study museum, which covers the history of the city from ancient times till present. The Art Museum has much to offer to residents and tourists. It shows different pictures and a great deal of wooden toys made by our regional skilled craftsmen. Museum of Folk Culture tells about history of folk in our region. It presents the way of life in previous centuries, national dress, folk songs and local social history.

There are several parks in Belgorod. The biggest one is the Central park. It offers various attractions. There are several summer cafes. The town library is situated next to the Central park.

You can see many students in Belgorod. They study at Belgorod State University; Belgorod Shukhov State Technology University; Belgorod University of Cooperation, Economics and Law; Belgorod State Agricultural Academy; Belgorod State Institute of Culture and Arts and Belgorod Law Institute of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia; and also at the branch of Moscow State University of Economics, Statistics and Informatics and the branch of Modern University for the Humanities.

Belgorod is an industrial town. There are many factories and plants in it. They are the Belgorod Engineering Plant, a sugar refinery, a cannery, a creamery, cement works, a brickfield and many others.

Belgorod is a beautiful town. In the center of it you can see Sobornaya Square, which was laid out in 1956. On one side of the square you can see the Belgorod State Academic Drama Theatre named after M. Shepkin. On the other side of it you can see the monument to the heroes of the Great Patriotic War with the Eternal Flame. The House of the Belgorod Regional Administration is opposite the theatre.

The town is still developing. There are a lot of new buildings there including banks, trade centers and churches. The people of Belgorod are proud of the town they live in.

Moscow is the capital of Russia and the largest industrial and cultural center of the country. It is one of the oldest Russian cities. It was founded in 1147 by Yuri Dolgoruky. It stands on the banks of the Moskva River. More than 11 million people live in the city. It covers the area of about 1080 square kilometers.

Its cathedrals and museums are open to the public. Thousands of tourists come here every day.

Many buildings inside the Kremlin were erected between the 15th and 17th centuries. They are unique monuments of the old Russian architecture. On the territory of the Kremlin tourists can see the Tsar Bell, which weighs 200 tons and the Tsar Cannon, which weighs 40 tons.

In Moscow there are a lot of beautiful squares. But the largest and most beautiful is Red Square. It is the site of mass demonstrations, festivals, parades. Here one can see a monument to Minin and Pozharsky, two national heroes who drove the Polish armies from Moscow in 1612. It was the first statue put up in Moscow. St. Basil’s Cathedral, a masterpiece of Russian architecture with coloured domes, is situated at the end of Red Square.

The Moscow Metro is the most beautiful in the world. Its every station is like a museum.

LONDON

London is the capital of Great Britain and England. It is one of the greatest cities in the world. The population of London is more than 9 million inhabitants. The river Thames divides London into two parts known as the north bank and the south bank. Actually there are several Londons. First there is the City of London. It is about 1 square mile in area and only a few thousand people live there. It is the heart of the business and financial life of the country. All business firms are concentrated here. The most striking building in the City today is St.Paul's Cathedral designed by Wren, a famous English architect of the 17th century. People say that the Cathedral is the finest RenaissanceChurch in Europe. The Bank of England, the Stock Exchange are in the City.

About 2 miles westward is another part of London called the West End. Here you will see Westminster Abbey, at which all British Kings and Queens are crowned. It dates back to 1049. Many famous people are buried in the Abbey, among them Newton, Darwin, Dickens and Kipling.

Across the road from Westminster Abbey there are the Houses of Parliament with its famous Big Ben, a huge clock built just over a century ago. In this part of London and further west, there are the finest theatres, cinemas and concert halls, large museums, hotels, restaurants, the most famous shops and beautiful parks. This is the West End where the rich live. Mayfair, Regent Street, Oxford Street, Bond Street - are famous for their splendid shops. You can see here very elegant people, men and women, grand hotels and club-houses and modern cars. The name "West End" is associated with wealth, luxury and goods of high quality.

To the East of the City there is the Port of London. Here are miles and miles of docks and the great industrial areas that depend upon shipping. This is the East End of London, unattractive in appearance, but very important to the country's commerce. Workers, dockers and small craftsmen live there. There are few large parks in the East End of London, very few squares and practically none of small traditional gardens in front of the houses. The East End has a lot of old houses built in Dickens's time, houses which the Londoners themselves have called "slums". In the main streets of the East End there are shops where you can buy good clothes and tasty food, but the majority of shops trade in cheap goods that are of course poor in quality. The majority of those who live in the East End are the hereditary inhabitants of the area. They love the East End and are proud that they have the right to call themselves "Cockneys". The word "cockney" means a true Londoner.

London gardens and parks are wonderful. They are called the lungs of the city. There are KensingtonGarden, Hyde Park, GreenPark, Saint James’s Park, RegentPark and Victoriapark in London. Walking in London parks you have the feeling that you are far away in the country, not in the centre of one of the largest cities of the world. There are lawns and flowerbeds, fountains and avenues in the parks, but mostly the parks consist of trees and grass and water. They are planned to look as natural as nature itself.

Hyde Park is situated in the centre of London. It is really national Londonpark. Here is the place for all sort of national parades and mass meetings, and in the alley over there - in Rotten Row - you can see the riders - At the Speakers Corner in Hyde Park you can see all sorts of orators who talk to the people about all sorts of things. In the park you can listen to the band. Hyde Park is the greatest people's park in Europe. It is some 300 acres in extent.

The most famous picture galleries in London are the National Gallery and the Tate Gallery. The National Gallery houses a priceless collection of the various schools of painting. One can admire a great number of pictures by great British painters Hogarth, Constable, Turner, the portraits by Gains borough, Reynolds, as well as the world's greatest masters - Michelangelo, Raphael, Rembrandt and many others. At present the collection of the Tate Gallery contains over four thousand British paintings and drawings by Turner, Moore and many others; over three hundred and fifty modern foreign paintings.

The British museum is one of the largest in the world. In the first place it is a great library with 5 or 6 mln. books; secondly, the British museum is a great scientific institution generally known as national History Museum, lastly, the British museum is a national museum of antiquities and ethnography. It is built in a classical style.

Washington is the capital of the United States of America. The city was called after the first President of the United States, General George Washington. Washington is situated on the Potomac River in the District of Columbia (DC). The District of Columbia is outside the jurisdiction of any state and subject only to the control of the Federal Congress.

Now it is a city of two million inhabitants. The federal district is a place of land ten miles square and it does not belong to any other state, but to all the states. The district is named in honor of Columbus, the discoverer of America.

While the capital is named after George Washington, it was not named by him. The first president called it simply "The Federal City", and the name Washington did not come into general use until after his death.

If you are interested in the law-making centre of the US, go to the Capitol, with its great Hall of Representatives and Senate Chamber. There are many places of interest near the Capitol. You can walk around the back of the Capitol and look across Union Square all the way down to the Washington Monument and beyond to the Lincoln Memorial. From the Capitol Pennsylvania Avenue leads off right to the White House. The tourists usually make a tour of the White House to see its rooms and grounds.

The White House, the President's residence, is located in Pennsylvania Avenue. The site was selected by president Washington and the architect was James Hoban.

The cornerstone of the Executive Mansion, as it was originally known, dates from October 1792. The British troops which arrived in Washington in 1814 were indirectly responsible for the name "White House." The building burnt down during the fighting. Later it was painted white to conceal the marks of the fire. But it remained the "Executive Mansion" until the administration of Theodore Roosevelt when "White House" appeared and the term became official.

The largest complex of museums in Washington DC is the Smithsonian Institution, comprising 15 museums with 6,000 employees. It contains more than 134 million items. The most popular museum in numbers of visitors is the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum, which opened in July 1976. The total attendance at the Smithsonian is about 24 million per year. The largest library in the world is the Library of Congress (founded 1800) on Capitol Hill. By 1988, it contained 86 million items, including 22 million books and pamphlets.

As America's capital city, Washington represents the governmental and political centre of the country. But it is also a major cultural, historical and economic centre, a city of great natural and monumental beauty.
