Seventh-generation straddle carriers

Kalmar introduced its seventh generation straddle carrier one year ago and since then has achieved sales of 70 machines around the world.

Antwerp Gateway terminal is currently taking delivery of 20 ESC straddle carriers ordered last year. Eight of the machines are 4-high stacking and the other 12 are 3-high.

Delivery of the straddle carriers to Antwerp coincides with the erection of the first of the Kalmar ship-to-shore cranes ordered last year.

Maher Terminals in the Port of New York & New Jersey operates a fleet of 150 Kalmar straddle carriers. Maher has ordered nine CSC350 twin-lift seventh generation machines to add to its fleet operating in the completely renovated Port Elizabeth facility.

Maher has been a partner in the development of the seventh generation by assisting Kalmar to boost the machines efficiency and performance.

Virginia Port Authority (VPA) is upgrading its Norfolk South Yard facility and converting from an RTG to a straddle carrier operation. VPA believes that this will give the terminal greater flexibility and efficiency and has ordered 30 CSC400 straddle carriers from Kalmar to work the terminal plus an addition unit for its Virginia Inland Port facility. The new machines will be added to the existing fleet of strads.

The units ordered by VPA are 3-high stacking and the one for the inland port incorporates a wider design for rail handling operations. Delivery will be towards the end of the year.

A fourth major purchaser of machines is Office d’Exploitation des Ports (ODEP) of Morocco which has ordered 10 ESC340 straddle carriers from Kalmar, nine for use in Casablanca and one at Agadir. These 3-high stackers are in addition to the existing fleet of 23 units operated by ODEP.

The seventh generation straddle carriers from Kalmar come in two basic types: the CSC Smoothlift hoist series and the enhanced all-electric Kalmar Edrive ESC Smoothlift hoist or winch rope hoist series. The basic variation available in both series is the choice between either 3-high or 4-high stacking and the ability to lift 40 tonnes or twin-lift 50 tonnes.

When announcing the new orders for seventh generation straddle carriers Ilkka Annala, VP Kalmar straddle carriers, said: “The seventh generation series includes models with an advanced AC drive system for smoother operations, lower emissions and improved performance. As a result, the carriers are faster to operate and can handle more containers per hour while consuming less fuel.”
