       Sentence Patterns with the For-phrase

The for-phrases have different syntactical functions in the sentence:

The Subject

It was easy for you to solve the puzzle.

It is easy for you to solve the puzzle.

It will be easy for you to solve the puzzle. 

The Object

A) to wait for smb. to do smth.

to arrange for smb. to do smth.

to be anxious for smb. to do smth.

       I have arranged for you to have a private room.

       I’m waiting for you to begin reading.

B) to make it difficult for smb. to do smth.

to think it easy for smb. to do smth.

       Your behaviour made it difficult for him to apologize.

       He thinks it best for him to tell her the truth.

The Attribute

Something for smb. to do smth.

Nothing for smb. to do smth.

       There is nothing else for me to tell you.

       It was the only thing for him to do.

The Adverbial Modifier of Purpose

To do smth. for smb. to do smth.

       He stepped aside for us to pass by.
