| 1.Alps | A.The world's longest exposed mountain range. They lie as a continuous chain of highland along the western coast of South America. The range is over 7,000 km (4,400 miles) long, 500 km (300 miles) wide in some parts (widest between 18° to 20°S latitude), and of an average height of about 4,000 m (13,000 ft). There are many theories about the etymology of its name. Some believe it derives from the Quechua word anti, which means "high crest". Some believe it derives from one of the four regions of the Inca empire. Some believe the name derives from the Spanish word andén which means terrace in reference to the cultivation terraces used by the Incas and other related peoples. |
| 2.Carpathians | B.A mountain range across a northern stretch of Africa extending about 2,400 km through Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia. The highest peak is Jbel Toubkal, with an elevation of 4,167 metres in southwestern Morocco. The range separates the Mediterranean and Atlantic coastlines from the Sahara Desert. The population of the mountains are mainly Berber tribes in Morocco and Kabyles in Algeria. |
| 3.Andes | C.A broad mountain range in western North America. They stretch more than 4,800 kilometers from northernmost British Columbia, in Canada, to New Mexico, in the United States. The range's highest peak is Colorado's Mount Elbert at 4,401 meters above sea level. Though part of North America's Pacific Cordillera, these mountains are distinct from the Pacific Coast Ranges which are located immediately adjacent to the Pacific coast. |
| 4.Himalayas | D.One of the great mountain range systems of Europe, stretching from Austria and Slovenia in the east, through Italy, Switzerland, Liechtenstein and Germany to France in the west. The name was taken via French from Latin and may be influenced by the Latin words albus (white) or altus (high) or more likely a Latin rendering of a Celtic or Ligurian original. The highest mountain is Mont Blanc, at 4,808 metres (15,774 ft), on the Italian-French border. |
| 5.Rocky Mountains | E.A vast system of mountains in eastern North America. The range is mostly located in the United States, but extends into southeastern Canada, forming a zone from 160 to 480 km wide, running from the island of Newfoundland 2,400 km south-westward to central Alabama in the United States (with foothills in northeastern Mississippi). The system is divided into a series of ranges, with the individual mountains averaging around 900 m. The highest of the group is Mount Mitchell in North Carolina at 2,037 m, which is the highest point in the United States east of the Mississippi River. |
| 6.Atlas | F.Amountain-barrier region located between the two continents of Europe and Asia, or Eurasia, with various altitude highlands and lowlands. It comprises Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan and part of Southern Russia (including the disputed territories of Abkhazia, Chechnya, South Ossetia and Nagorno-Karabakh). In Greek mythology, it was one of the pillars supporting the world. Prometheus was chained there by Zeus after Prometheus had presented man with the gift of fire. |
| 7.Caucasus | G.A range of mountains forming an arc of roughly 1,500 km across Central and Eastern Europe, making them the largest mountain range in Europe. They provide the habitat for the largest populations in Europe of brown bears, wolves, chamois and lynxes, all concentrated in Romania as well as over one third of all European plant species. The chain of mountain ranges stretches in an arc from the Czech Republic in the northwest to Slovakia, Poland, Ukraine and Romania in the east, to the Iron Gates on the Danube River between Romania and Serbia in the south. The highest range within the chain are the Tatras, on the border of Poland and Slovakia, where the highest peaks exceed 2600 meters in elevation. |
| 8. Appalachian Mountains | H.A mountain range in Asia, separating the Indian subcontinent from the Tibetan Plateau. The name is from Sanskrit meaning "the abode of snow". This mountain system is the planet's highest and home to the world's highest peaks. The system, which includes outlying subranges, stretches across six countries: Bhutan, China, India, Nepal, Pakistan and Afghanistan. They are the source of three of the world's major river systems, the Indus, the Ganga-Brahmaputra, and the Yangtze. Approximately 1.3 billion people live in the drainage basin of these rivers. |
