Information technology (IT) is widely recognized as the engine that drives the U.S. economy, giving industry a competitive advantage in global markets, enabling the federal government to provide better services to its citizens, and facilitating greater productivity as a nation. IT is revolutionizing society as profoundly as mechanical technology did in creating the industrial revolution. As a result, we are increasingly dependent for society’s everyday functioning on electronic ways to gather, store, manipulate, retrieve, transmit, and use information.

Information technology has become number one priority in every way – from our phones and other small devices to our enterprise networks to the infrastructure that runs our economy.

The U.S. Government is the world’s largest consumer of information technology, spending over $76 billion annually on more than 10,000 different systems

This increasing dependence on information technology is creating a need to improve the confidentiality and integrity of electronic information, i.e., its security. As the critical infrastructures of the United States have become more and more dependent on public and private networks, the potential for widespread national impact resulting from the disruption or failure of these networks has also increased.

The world is fast becoming a “global village” and the thirst for more knowledge and information has been a driving force for the drastic changes in Information Technology around the world. These changes are what people have termed as the “third industrial revolution”. One can see the basic trends in the IT revolution in terms of its structural changes, from telephony to the internet, fixed to mobile telephone. The role of information technology and productivity growth becomes the subject of hot debate in the US.

Information technology today has a completely distinct essence to it when compared with how it was perceived to be back in the day.

Electronic Business

E – Business is the application of information and communication technologies (ICT) in support of all the activities of business. Commerce constitutes the exchange of products and services between businesses, groups and individuals and can be seen as one of the essential activities of any business. Electronic commerce focuses on the use of ICT to enable the external activities and relationships of the business with individuals, groups and other businesses or e- business refers to business with help of internet. The term “e-business” was coined by IBM in 1996.

After conducting worldwide market research, in October 1997, IBM introduces the concept of “e-business” and advertise IBM’s expertise in this new field. IBM decided not to trademark the term “e-business” in the hopes that other companies would use the term and create an entire new industry. However, this proved to be too successful and by 2000 IBM launched a $300 million campaign about its “e-business infrastructure” capabilities. Since that time, however, the terms, “e-business” and “e-commerce” have been loosely interchangeable and have become a part of the common vernacular.

Trends in the development of E-Business identify three major tendencies. The first concerns the trend of mobile traffic and sales from mobile devices. The second is an interest in the electronic trading platform. The third is in global internet sales.
