The rain is raining all around,

It falls on field and tree,

It rains on the umbrellas here,

P: Skate and ski together

On a winter day,

Boys and girls — be happy!

It was the letter S, boys and girls.

T.: What's next? Who knows?

P: I know. It's the letter T.

The words like toys, toothbrush and tram,

The numbers — twenty-three and ten,

My teacher, theatre and tree —

Are good and interesting for me!

P: Usually the letter U is found in the middle

Of words — cube, bus and cup

Or something else, like "muddle".

P: "Vegetables" — starts with a V.

I like the summer season,

When vegetables grow fast

And here is the reason:

The sun is out at last.

P: My watch is running night and day,

But it will never run away.

"Watch" begins with a W.

P: I have a very good crayon box.

And very many crayons.

I draw a taxi and a fox

In bright green, red and yellow.

T.: That was the letter X, and here is Y.

P: In winter you and me,

All children like to ski.

In the evening you and me,

We like to have hot tea.

We like as well to look at the

New Year tree

And sing: "The More We Are Together

The merrier we'll be!"

T.: The last letter is the letter Z.

P: Tomorrow on Sunday we go to the zoo!

There's a giraffe there and a zebra too,

A bear and a monkey, and a kangaroo!

T.: We've just gone through

The English alphabet.

Let's sing "The Alphabet Song" together,

Try and help us if you can.

AN ENCHANTED PUDDING

(an old Welsh folk-tale)

Characters: Harry (a magician), Ka­tie (the mistress of the house), Jack (Ka­tie's husband), Molly (their daughter), Molly's bridegroom, a clergyman, guests.

Scene 1

Harry: My niece Molly wants to marry that ugly boy. I'm against it. What shall I do to prevent this wedding? Oh. I can cast a spell on the wedding pudding. I have no time to waste. I must hurry.

Scene 2

Kane and Jack come on the stage.

Katie: The wedding pudding is ready. It smells so delicious.

Harry: Damn it!

Katie: Don't swear!

Jac k: What's up?

Harry: What's up? What's up? It's the end of the world. The sun has completely disappeared and the moon is rising high. You'd better go out of the house and say our prayers to God.

When Katie and Jack run out of the house, Hurry puts the pudding under a spell. Katie and Jack reenter the house.

Jack: We didn't see anything unusual.

Harry: O. K. The sun has just had a bit o: stomachache. But never mind. Nothing is wrong. I must fly now. I think that the wedding will be even more lively than you oppose.

He goes away. The pudding begins to move.

Jack: Katie, what has happened to the pudding?

Katie: What do you mean?

Jack: Your pudding is dancing a jig. Look at it. It's alive, otherwise the pudding wouldn't jump.

Katie: Oh, my! Right you are, Jack. There is an evil spirit here. What shall we do?

The pudding goes up to Katie.

Katie: For Lord's sake, don't come to us. Nobody wants to hurt you. It's Harry who has cast a spell on you. Go chase him if you like and please let me alone. I'm a poor old woman and I meant no harm.

The pudding goes up to Jack.

Jack: Believe me, Your Honour, my wife has told you the truth. It's him you want. Run after Harry. You'll catch him in no time. But, my word, your dancing-master has not wasted time upon you.

The pudding goes on dancing and jumping.

Scene 3

Molly, her bridegroom, a clergyman and guests come on the stage.

Molly: Here we are. Father, Mother, congratulate us.

Katie: Be happy, my dear.

Molly: But where is our wedding pud­ding?

Katie: Well... But... That's...

Molly: What's the matter?

Katie: Your uncle Harry has come to our place and I think he has enchanted the wedding pudding for it's been jumping and dancing ever since and we can't stop it. And your father and I are just afraid of this mad pudding.

Molly: Where is it? I'll calm it down in no time. (She comes up to the pudding, but as soon as she touches it the pudding seizes her hand and she starts dancing and jump­ing.) Help! Help! Help me!

The bridegroom tries to help her and begins to dance too.

Molly and her bridegroom: Help! Help!

Katie (to the clergyman): Father, help them!

The clergyman tries to cross the pudding, but when he raises his hand, the bridegroom seizes it and the clergyman starts dancing and jumping with them too.

Katie: Good Gracious! Never before have I seen a clergyman hop as a goat. Father, what disgraceful behaviour! Stop it at once!

She catches at the hand of the clergyman and starts to jump and dance herself.

Katie: Oh, my God! Save me, Jack!

Her husband and guests join them one by one. Then they leave the stage dancing and jumping after the pudding.

Scene 4

Harry: Never before have you seen such a merry wedding. The bride, the bridegroom, the parents, the guests and even the clergy­man danced and jumped with the pudding until they almost dropped dead. And the enchanted pudding escaped. Even I couldn't find it. What has happened to it? Who knows? Not me and not you, I think.

He bows and goes away.

I MYSELF

(an old Scottish folk-tale)

Characters: Percy (a little boy), his mother, Brownie (an elf), Old Fairy (Brown­ie's mother).

In the middle of the stage there is a fire­place. Percy's bed is in one corner and a ta­ble is in the other.

Scene 1

Percy: My name is Percy. I live with my mother in a small house in Scotland. Our house is warm and cosy, especially in the evening, when my mother tells me old Scottish tales sitting by the fireplace.

Percy's mother comes into the room.

Mother: Here is a jug of cream for our little Brownie. He comes every night and helps me about the house. That's why our house is so clean and tidy.

Percy: Mother, why do you always put the jug near the fireplace?

Mother: Little Brownie lives behind the fireplace. He lives there with his mother

the Old Fairy. She never conies here, she is very wicked, she hates people and besides she hates to be troubled. Little Brownie is kind, but he is very touchy and if I forget to leave a jug of cream for him, he'll be able to turn everything upside down. (She puts the jug near the fireplace.) Here it is. Help yourself, little Brownie. Percy! It's time for you to go to bed.

Percy: But it's too early. I don't want to go to bed tonight.

Mother: You never do. Stop arguing for once. All good boys are already in bed. So turn over and go to sleep.

Percy: I'm simply tired of going to bed every night.

Mother (angrily): Sit here alone by the fire. Just wait for the Old Fairy to come and take you because you don't obey your mother.

She takes a candlestick from the table and goes away.

Percy: I don't care a bit! I'm not afraid of wicked old fairies!

He sits by the fireplace. Brownie jumps from behind the fireplace. Percy starts. For some time Brownie looks at Percy and Percy looks at Brownie.

Percy: What's your name?

Brownie: Myself. And what's your name?

He makes a face at Percy.

Percy (to the audience): It's a lie! So I won't tell him the truth either. (To Brown­ie): My name is I Myself.

Brownie: Catch me, I Myself.

Merry music is on. They chase each other, dance and play near the fireplace. Then Per­cy takes a poker and starts to stir the coal. A small piece of coal falls on Brownie's foot and he howls.

Old Fairy (runs out from behind the fireplace): Who has hurt you? I'll give him a sound scolding!

Frightened Percy hops in his bed and cov­ers himself with his blanket.

Brownie: I Myself.

Old Fairy: Then you've only got your­self to blame.

She snatches Brownie by the collar and drags him behind the fireplace.

Scene 2

Percy's mother: I wonder what hap­pened, but since then little Brownie has never come again to help me. Of course, I regret that I've lost my helper. But I'm very content with Percy. For now I never have to tell him twice that it's time to go to bed.

She leaves the stage.
