1. Foxes seem to be having it all their own way in Britain at the moment. Not only has hunting them been banned in the countryside, but foxes are even gaining ground in the cities. The urban fox has been slowly growing in numbers for the past fifty years and has now become a regular feature of our cityspace.

2. These new city neighbours of ours, however, are certainly not without their bad habits. Perhaps the most unsociable of all is the high-pitched cry they have developed so as to be heard above the city’s noise. Like other animals, they also tend to mark out their territory with their scent, dig holes in people’s gardens and do other similar things.

3. It’s not only private homes that are at risk. Foxes have been known to disturb the public peace, too. One playful fox managed to halt a tense football match between Celtic and Rangers by running onto the pitch, slipping past security and police officers, much to the enjoyment of the crowd. To this day, nobody knows quite how he entered or how he escaped.

4. Despite the numerous little crimes, foxes remain a source of strange fascination for the general public. Most surveys show we have a remarkable degree of affection for these small mammals, despite their rather disagreeable day-to-day behavior on the street. In one recent online poll, over 80% of the population placed foxes among Britain’s most cherished animals. So, how is it that these mischievous urban immigrants manage to maintain their positive public image in spite of everything?

5. Some people suggest that foxes have brought a rare glimpse of nature back to our sprawling concrete cities. The sight of a fox could be a brief reminder of the varied British wildlife beyond the city limits. But I suspect the real answer is even simpler. It may be that, amidst the hustle and bustle of our modern cities, these cheeky animals provide a form of relief from the rush of urban life.

6. It has to be said that as far as animal neighbours go, foxes really are relatively tame. No one has ever complained of being attacked by a fox, whereas thousands of dog attacks are reported to the police every year. Foxes don’t tend to spread any diseases, either, apart from the occasional tick (клещ) which is really treated. While they may be nuisance at times, foxes pose no real danger to people.

7. It looks like the urban fox is set to stay, despite its fault. While they may not be the perfect neighbours, they continue to fascinate us and capture our imagination.
