Navigation Methods

As a modern seaman, you have the luxury of advanced electronic navigation. With a GPS on every vessel, establishing an electronic LOP by satellite is instant and effortless. However, navigation was not always so easy. In the early days of sea travel, sailors used a method called piloting to travel along coastlines. More adventurous explorers used dead reckoning to travel father out. Both of these methods were limiting and carried a high risk of error. With the rise of celestial navigation, however, sea travel became much more practical. Even today, the night sky remains a reliable tool for finding your bearings.

If you can see the shore, you can use the range of known locations on land to calculate two or more lines of position. You will also need to be familiar with standard time, speed, and distance formulas so that your calculations are accurate.

Summary of Port Conditions

Date: January 11

Vessel: KLUB11

Status: We left port at 0930 hours. This report reflects conditions at the time of our departure.

Tide: Our departure was delayed slightly. We loaded early, just before low tide. The channel was too shallow to depart at that point. The tide continued to ebb until 0530 hours. We did not have time to wait until high tide, but we did let the tide flood for a few hours before embarking at 0930 hours. We did not encounter any problems in the channel.

Current: The set of the current was northeast with a drift of about two knots. It caused our vessel to veer slightly. Fortunately, the navigator noticed the change in heading and quickly corrected course.

Wind: We left port slowly since we were carefully monitoring depth, so we created little relative velocity. The true wind, however, was fairly strong, assessed as a 5 on the Beaufort scale and creating moderate waves. The wind speed of the apparent wind was approximately 15 knots, according to our instruments.
