Two diesel-electric ships, the “OB", the “LENA” were specially designed and built for Antarctic research.

Their first important task consisted in carrying people, building materials and scientific equipment to the Antarctic continent and helping the construction of Mirny, the first base and station there. In November 1955 the expedition left Kaliningrad on the “OB”, the “Lena” following her sister-ship in December. After a very heavy passage the ship reached Mirny in the second half of January and started their unloading. During the unloading, the weather was frequently bad, the tractor trails from the ship to the base were often out of order and the two ships kept on changing their anchorages. In March the "Ob" and the "Lena" left Mirny and began carrying out their programme of oceanographically work in the southern seas. Both the ships arrived in Leningrad in July 1956 greeted by thousands of enthusiastic citizens who had read much about the ships having successfully made this most difficult and dangerous passage.

The second Antarctic voyage of the “OB” and the “Lena” lasted seven and a half months during which the ships covered more than 40,000 miles. After leaving Kaliningrad on the 7th of November 1956, the “Ob” arrived at Mirny on December 11, the “Lena” joining her in a month’s time. On being prevented by ice from going to the unloading place at Mirny, the “Lena” continued sailing westwards along the coast, without finding a safe anchorage. After covering some 200 miles the "Lena" managed to land the aircraft which was urgently required for the purpose of setting up the inland stations.

OUR EXCURSION

First of all we came to the navigating bridge and entered the wheel-house. We saw a gyro-compass, a course recorder and a log there.

“We have the most up-to-date navigation instruments. Let's take this one for instance,” said the mate pointing to an apparatus resembling a television set.

“This is a special radar. When it is foggy or we are moving at night, we can see where we are on the radar screen and what is round us. This is an echo-sounder. It measures" the sea depth'. And this is a direction finder. It is used to fix the ship's position.”

Having' examined the wheel-house and the chart-room we went to the radio-room. The radio-room is also situated on the navigating bridge. The chief radio officer is our graduate. He was very glad to see us. The radio staff of the ship is rather large. The ship carries seven radio specialists on her board.

The chief radio officer showed us different, transmitters, receivers, teletypes and marine satellite communication facilities. The equipment of the radio-room is modem and is kept in good order. The radio-operators keep watch day and night exchanging radio-telegrams and booking official and private telephone calls.

Then our guide showed us the saloon and cabins. The cabins of the liner are very comfortable. Most of them are double berthed. The liner having 300 cabins, it is capable of carrying 700 passengers. All cabins have naturals lighting and air conditioning.

Then we visited the music saloon on the saloon deck. Interesting concerts are given in this saloon. We saw a swimming-pool, a restaurant accommodating up to 300 visitors, a cinema and a library. Then we went down a steep ladder and found ourselves in the engine-room.
