Drills & Station Bills

One crucial duty of any crew member is to always be prepared for emergencies. Drills are one important way to prepare both crew members and passengers for a disaster or emergency. Crew members are responsible for understanding proper drill procedures onboard their vessel. On a passenger vessel, the life boat drill is especially important. All passengers should know their muster locations and life boat stations.

Crew members should also be familiar with a ship’s alarm signals. Vessels may use whistles or intercom alarm systems, or both. Different patterns of whistle or alarm blasts signify different procedures. Use of these signals should become second nature to sailors. Sailors should also familiarize themselves with station bill andmuster list locations. Both documents should be posted in conspicuous locations throughout the vessel. Many ships now use standard station bills for listing emergency duties. Rather than using names, standard station bills list duties according to a sailors berth orarticle number. A well-prepared sailor should memorize the information on these documents before sailing This allows for quicker response time in case of emergency and a safer voyage in general.

II. Read the text “Mooring” and name different equipment used for mooring (ОК -2, ОК -6, ОК -7, ПК -1, Т. А - II /1, А - II /2).

 

It’s everyone’s responsibility to avoid damage to ships and piers. Please take a moment to brush up on steps for mooring. ARRIVING AT PORT: Mooring lines should be made ready to be sent to the pier. They should be faked down on deck or taken off the spool and the eye run through a chock. A closed chock or roller chock provides a smooch surface for mooring lines to move across and change direction on. A roller chock has one or two cylinders that roll when a line moves across them to reduce abrasion. Most fenders and camels will be in place on the pier prior to the ship’s arrival. AT PORT: When the ship is along side of the pier, lines are lowered to the pier, passed around a cleat or bollard. When given the command to “heave around” all slack is taken out of the mooring line. When the ship is stable and in position, the mooring line is belayed to a set of bitts by using a “round turn" and figure eights. Run the lines through roller chocks and secure them around cleats or bollards.

LEAVING PORT: When you hear the command to “cast off”, get ready to take in all lines.
