Word building:
Adjective suffixes – - ic, - al, - ous (-ious, -atous, -uous)
Noun suffix – - us
The suffixes - ic and - al can be used to turn nouns into adjectives.
Suffix -ic is used to form adjectives from nouns with the meaning "of or pertaining to": Cyrillic, acidic
Suffix –al has the meaning ‘of or pertaining to’ and is appended to various words, often nouns, to make an adjective form. Often added to words of Latin origin, but used with other words also: line, lineal base, basal cranium, cranial
Suffix –ous
- is used to form adjectives from nouns, to denote possession or presence of a quality in any degree, commonly in abundance: bulb + -ous → bulbous, joy + -ous → joyous, poison + -ous → poisonous
|
- is used in chemical nomenclature to name chemical compounds in which a specified chemical element has a lower oxidation number than in the equivalent compound whose name ends in the suffix -ic. For example sulphuric acid (H 2 SO4) has more oxygen atoms per molecule than sulphurous acid (H2SO3).
Suffix -us is a suffix of nouns. This suffix is added to the root of the word but not to a definite part of the speech. Usually these words are of Latin-Greek origin: virus, focus, circus.
