He carried three books bound together by some sort of ornamental elastic ligature, and a bundle wrapped in a blue table-cloth. His rubicund face expressed consternation and fatigue; he appeared to be in a spasmodic sort of hurry. He was accompanied by a voice other than his own, and ever and again he winced under the touch of unseen hands.

“If you give me the slip again,” said the Voice, “if you attempt to give me the slip again — ”

 

“Lord (Господи)!” said Mr. Marvel. “That shoulder’s a mass of bruises as it is (это плечо и так уже сплошной синяк).”

“On my honour (честное слово: «/клянусь/ моей честью/»),” said the Voice, “I will kill you (я тебя убью).”

“I didn’t try to give you the slip (я и не пытался удрать),” said Marvel, in a voice that was not far remote from tears (сказал Марвел голосом, который несильно отличался от слез = едва не плача; far — дальний, отдаленный; far from — далеко не; remote — удаленный; сильно отличающийся). “I swear I didn’t (клянусь, не пытался). “You’ll get knocked about a great deal more if you don’t mind (тебе достанется еще больше, если не будешь слушаться; a great deal — много, большое количество; сильно; to mind — заниматься /чем-либо/; слушаться; быть внимательным; не забыть выполнить),” said the Voice, and Mr. Marvel abruptly became silent (сказал Голос, и мистер Марвел сразу замолчал). He blew out his cheeks (он надул щеки; to blow out), and his eyes were eloquent of despair (и его глаза выражали отчаяние; eloquent — красноречивый; выражающий /что-либо — of/).

“Lord!” said Mr. Marvel. “That shoulder’s a mass of bruises as it is.”

“I didn’t try to give you the slip,” said Marvel, in a voice that was not far remote from tears. “I swear I didn’t. I didn’t know the blessed turning, that was all! How the devil was I to know the blessed turning? As it is, I’ve been knocked about — ”

“You’ll get knocked about a great deal more if you don’t mind,” said the Voice, and Mr. Marvel abruptly became silent. He blew out his cheeks, and his eyes were eloquent of despair.

 

“It’s bad enough to let these floundering yokels explode my little secret (и так весьма скверно, что эти заикающиеся деревенщины узнали мою маленькую тайну; to flounder — барахтаться; говорить с трудом; to explode — взрывать/ся/; уничтожать, опровергать /теорию и т.д./), without your cutting off with my books (а тут еще ты вздумал убежать с моими книгами: «/и/ без твоего удирания с моими книгами»; to cut off — отсекать, отрезать; бежать). “What am I to do (а мне-то что делать)?” asked Marvel, sotto voce (спросил Марвел вполголоса).

“It’s all about (/теперь/ все известно; about — кругом; повсюду). It will be in the papers (попадет в газеты)! Everybody will be looking for me (все будут искать меня); everyone on their guard — (все будут начеку…)” The Voice broke off into vivid curses and ceased (Голос крепко выругался и замолк; to break into — перейти на: to break into a laugh — разразиться смехом; to break into a run — побежать; vivid — живой, яркий; пылкий).

The despair of Mr. Marvel’s face deepened, and his pace slackened (отчаяние на лице Марвела усугубилось, и его шаги замедлились; to deepen — делать/ся/ глубже; усиливать/ся/; to slacken — ослаблять, становиться менее интенсивным; замедлять /шаг/).

“Go on (не мешкай: «иди вперед/продолжай идти»)!” said the Voice.

“It’s bad enough to let these floundering yokels explode my little secret, without your cutting off with my books. It’s lucky for some of them they cut and ran when they did! Here am I... No one knew I was invisible! And now what am I to do?”

“What am I to do?” asked Marvel, sotto voce.

“It’s all about. It will be in the papers! Everybody will be looking for me; everyone on their guard — ” The Voice broke off into vivid curses and ceased.

The despair of Mr. Marvel’s face deepened, and his pace slackened.

“Go on!” said the Voice.

 

Mr. Marvel’s face assumed a greyish tint between the ruddier patches (лицо Марвела приобрело сероватый оттенок между румяными пятнами).

“Don’t drop those books, stupid (не урони эти книги, болван; stupid — глупый, тупой, бестолковый),” said the Voice, sharply (резко сказал Голос) — overtaking him (догоняя его; to overtake — догнать, наверстать, нагнать; обогнать).

“The fact is (дело в том),” said the Voice, “I shall have to make use of you (что мне придется использовать тебя)... You’re a poor tool, but I must (ты неважное орудие = не Бог весть какое орудие, но я должен; poor — бедный; плохой, недостаточный).”

“I’m a miserable tool (я жалкое орудие),” said Marvel.

“You are (да, верно),” said the Voice.

“I’m the worst possible tool you could have (я наихудшее из всех возможных орудие, какое только могло бы у вас быть),” said Marvel.

“I’m a miserable tool,” said Marvel.

“You are,” said the Voice.

“I’m the worst possible tool you could have,” said Marvel.

 

“I’m not strong (я не сильный),” he said after a discouraging silence (сказал он после обескураживающего молчания).

“I’m not over strong (я очень слабый),” he repeated (повторил он).

“No (неужели)?”

“And my heart’s weak (и сердце у меня слабое). That little business — I pulled it through, of course (с этим маленьким поручением я справился, конечно; to pull through — спастись от /опасности/; преодолеть /трудности/) — but bless you! I could have dropped (но, право, я чуть не упал от усталости; to drop — капать; падать, валиться с ног от усталости).”

“Well (да)?”

“I haven’t the nerve and strength for the sort of thing you want (у меня нет храбрости и силы для того /дела/, что вам нужно; to have the nerve to do something — иметь мужество сделать что-либо).”

“I’m not strong,” he said after a discouraging silence.

“I’m not over strong,” he repeated.

“No?”

“And my heart’s weak. That little business — I pulled it through, of course — but bless you! I could have dropped.”

“Well?”

“I haven’t the nerve and strength for the sort of thing you want.”

 

“ I’ll stimulate you (я тебя подбодрю; to stimulate — стимулировать; побуждать, поощрять).”

“I wish you wouldn’t (лучше не надо: «я желаю, чтобы вы не делали /этого/). I wouldn’t like to mess up your plans, you know (мне бы не хотелось нарушить ваши планы). But I might — out of sheer funk and misery (но я могу /все испортить/ — из-за чистого страха и страданий = вдруг мне станет страшно или плохо).”

“You’d better not (лучше уж, чтобы этого не случилось: «ты бы лучше не /делал/ этого»),” said the Voice, with quiet emphasis (произнес Голос со спокойной выразительностью = спокойно, но твердо).

“I wish I was dead (уж лучше помереть: «хотел бы я быть мертвым»),” said Marvel.

“It ain’t justice (это несправедливо),” he said; “you must admit (согласитесь: «вы должны признать»)... It seems to me I’ve a perfect right — (мне кажется, я имею полное право…)”

“ Get on (вперед; to get on — продолжать; поторапливаться)!” said the Voice.

Mr. Marvel mended his pace (Марвел прибавил шагу; to mend — исправлять, улучшать), and for a time they went in silence again (и некоторое время они снова шли молча: «в безмолвии»).

“I wish I was dead,” said Marvel.

“ Get on!” said the Voice.

Mr. Marvel mended his pace, and for a time they went in silence again.

 

“It’s devilish hard (это чертовски тяжело),” said Mr. Marvel.

This was quite ineffectual (это /замечание/ было совершенно безрезультатным). He tried another tack (он решил начать по-другому; to try another tack — изменить курс, пойти по другому пути; tack — стежок; наметка /при шитье/; курс; линия поведения).

“What do I make by it (что мне за это будет; to make — делать; получать, зарабатывать)?” he began again in a tone of unendurable wrong (начал он снова тоном невыносимой обиды = сильно обиженным голосом; wrong — несправедливость, обида).

“Oh! shut up (заткнись)!” said the Voice, with sudden amazing vigour (внезапно поразительно энергично сказал Голос; vigour — сила, энергия; живость). “I’ll see to you all right (я позабочусь о тебе; all right — хорошо, как надо). You do what you’re told (делай, что тебе говорят). You’ll do it all right (ты отлично справишься). You’re a fool and all that, but you’ll do — (ты дурак и все такое прочее, но ты справишься…)”

“I tell you, sir, I’m not the man for it (говорю вам, сэр, я не тот = неподходящий человек для этого). Respectfully — but it is so — (при всем почтении к вам = не хочу вам возражать, но это так…; respectfully — почтительно, вежливо)”

“If you don’t shut up I shall twist your wrist again (если не заткнешься, я снова выверну тебе запястье),” said the Invisible Man. “I want to think (мне нужно подумать).”

“What do I make by it?” he began again in a tone of unendurable wrong.

“Oh! shut up!” said the Voice, with sudden amazing vigour. “I’ll see to you all right. You do what you’re told. You’ll do it all right. You’re a fool and all that, but you’ll do — ”

“I tell you, sir, I’m not the man for it. Respectfully — but it is so — ”

“If you don’t shut up I shall twist your wrist again,” said the Invisible Man. “I want to think.”

 

Presently two oblongs of yellow light appeared through the trees (вскоре два пятна желтого света показались сквозь деревья), and the square tower of a church loomed through the gloaming (и квадратная башня церкви смутно вырисовывалась в сумерках; to loom — виднеться вдали, неясно вырисовываться).

“I shall keep my hand on your shoulder (я буду держать руку у тебя на плече),” said the Voice, “all through the village (все /время/, пока /будем идти/ через деревню). Go straight through and try no foolery (иди прямо и не пытайся дурить; foolery — дурачество; глупый поступок). It will be the worse for you if you do (иначе тебе же хуже будет).”

“I know that (я это знаю),” sighed Mr. Marvel (вздохнул Марвел), “I know all that (это я хорошо знаю; all that — все это; до такой степени, так уж /сильно/).”

The unhappy-looking figure in the obsolete silk hat (фигура с несчастным видом в старом изношенном цилиндре; obsolete — устаревший; изношенный, обветшалый) passed up the street of the little village with his burdens (прошла по улице деревеньки со своей ношей), and vanished into the gathering darkness beyond the lights of the windows (и исчезла в сгущающемся мраке, за пределами огней окон = за околицей; to gather — собирать/ся/).
