Russia attracts foreign Businessmen and Bankers

Investment Forum a five-day seminar held from 11-15 March in St. Petersburg City attracted over 600 businessmen from 31 countries representing 431 companies, mainly from North America, Western Europe and Asia. The conference was co-sponsored by the Russia-based United Nations Industries Development Organization (UNIDO).

During the conference Russia assured the participants that the country was committed to its open-door economic policy, and that it urgently needed to normalize its relations with the United States to gain access to loans from multilateral organizations and direct foreign investments from Western enterprises to develop its infrastructure.

The participants from 431 companies held 1,200 meetings with state-owned enterprises in Russia. Before the conference ended 49 letters of intent were signed and 18 feasibility studies were agrees to.

In addition, Russia granted business licences to 11 foreign companies ventures worth over $ 50 mn.

Russia is rich in natural resources and its workforce diligent. The country has changed its foreign investment law which allow private local companies along with state-owned enterprises ventures directly with foreign partners.

In the banking sector Russia will soon issue licences to foreign banks to operate in the country. At present there are five banks from France, one from the UK and one from Thailand with representative offices in Russia. The main activities of these banks are in the area of trade finance, project finance and correspondent banking.

Foreign banks are now waiting for the publication of new rules and regulations which will set guidelines for them on the minimum capital required, scope of business operations and number of branches they will be allowed to operate.
