Education in Russia

Education is an important part of modern life. Being educated means to know a lot of necessary and useful things for life, which is why every decent person studies at school. Originally Russian education starts from the early age. Children can start going to kindergarten from the age of two, but this is not a compulsory education. It depends on parents’ decision and child’s wish to attend this institution. However, school is mandatory. Every child starts going to school from the age of seven and till 16. Mandatory education in Russia is presented by three types of schools: primary, secondary and high. The primary school teaches its pupils elementary skills, such as reading, writing, counting. Many schools also offer foreign languages or some other special disciplines at this age. The most important period is the secondary school, which starts from the 4th or 5th grade, depending on school. This is the time when children start learning Biology, Geography, Chemistry, Physics, Computing, and many other new subjects. At the 9th grade children face a very important period in their life. They have to choose whether to continue school education, or to leave for other types of educational institutions, such as college, specialized schools and else. If the pupil decides to continue studying in high school, which lasts for two years, he can enter the university after school graduation. Of course, it’s only the general pattern of education in Russia, but there can also be some exceptions nowadays. For example, there are lots of special schools, where they pay attention only to particular subjects. Also, apart from state schools, there are a number of private schools, where education is not free of charge.

My College

My name is Elena. I’m sixteen years old. I live in Tver, Russia. I have recently graduated from my high school and entered Tver Chemical Technology College. It is one of the best colleges in the city. Besides, I have always wanted to study biochemistry after school. I really like this college and some of my close friends have also applied to study here. My parents have always wanted me to be a lawyer, but I have made up my mind to become a chemical technician. The entrance exams included Biology and Russian and I passed both of them with excellent marks. I am delighted to study such subjects as English, Chemistry of all kinds, Microbiology, Physical Education and else. Our college is rather well equipped. There is a large sports ground outside and one gym inside. There is also a huge library with a good choice of medical books. Today, the college provides basic and advanced training in such specialties as IT technology, technology of cooking, laboratory diagnosis, accountancy and some other branches. I’m very proud to be a student of this college. Today, Tver Chemical Technology College is one of the most prestigious and reliable institutions in the city.

Geographical Position

Australia is the only country in the world that is also a continent. It is the sixth large country and the smallest continent.The capital of the country is Canberra. The official language is English.

Nature of Australia

Australia is the driest continent on the Earth. The unique climate and the isolation of Australia from other continents explain the existence of unusual plants and animals.

The commonest tree of Australia is the eucalyptus. In the drier areas there is the Australian acacia or mimosa. In those areas one can also find strange bottle trees. They preserve water in their trunks.

Australian animals are also very unusual. Among them there are kangaroos, duck-bills, koala bears, and others.

Population and Cities

Australian population is about 23 million people. The natives of the country are called Aborigines. Now they comprise a very small part of the country’s population due to the former extrusion ofthe indigenous peoplein the past.

There are 5 big cities in Australia: Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth and Brisbane. Canberra was specially planned as a capital. All the government buildings are situated there.

Sydney is the oldest and largest city in Australia. It is a big industrial centre. About 5 million people live in the city.

Attractions in Australia

Australia has a lot to offer to tourists.

The Great Barrier Reef is the world's largest coral reef system composed of over 2,900 individual reefs and 900 islands.

The most famous building in the country is the Sydney Opera House. Its roof looks like sails. It is a masterpiece of architecture. More than 5,000 people can visit concerts, operas, theatre performances and other events.

Kakadu National Park is in Australia’s Northern Territory and covers about 20,000 square kilometres. It is a wetland with over 200 kinds of birds and 1,700 plant species. It is also the home of Australian crocodiles.
