A Miracle

David Garrick was a famous English actor of the 18th century. At the beginning of his stage career he worked in a company of actors which toured the south of England.

One summer day the company arrived at a little town. They staged a tragedy based on an episode of the Punic Wars. The evening was warm and they played in an open-air theatre.

At the beginning of the second act there was a scene of a battle-field. There were several bodies of dead soldiers lying on the stage. David Garrick played the part of one of these dead bodies. He was lying on the stage and trying hard to look like a real dead body. An actor playing the part of a Roman 298 general came forward and, standing over Garrick, began to recite a monologue.

Suddenly Garrick heard a mosquito buzzing near his ear. Then there were two mosquitoes. The next moment several mosquitoes were stinging him in the face and in the leg. Garrick wanted to scratch himself, but he was playing the part of a dead man, so he could not move. He suffered greatly.

Meanwhile the general went on with his mono­logue. "Look at this young man," he was saying, "Only a few hours ago he was full of life... and there he lies now — a dead body! Only a miracle can bring him back to life!"

And just at that moment Garrick, who could not stand the mosquitoes any longer, began scratching himself violently!

The audience burst out laughing. Of course, the actor playing the part of the general could not continue his monologue. He was thinking hard how to save the situation. At last he had an idea. "The gods have heard me!" he cried out. "The miracle has happened!"

William Shakespeare

William Shakespeare was born on April 23,in the town of Stratford-on-Avon. His father, John Shakespeare bought and sold com, meat, wool, leather. His wife, the writer's mother, Mary Arden, was the daughter of a rich farmer. William Shakespeare had seven brothers and sisters. Shakespeare's parents were rich.

In his childhood William went to the Stratford Grammar School where, besides reading and writing, he was taught Latin. Shakespeare left the grammar School when he was thirteen years old and never went to school again. About this time his father's money difficulties began. Another pair of hands was needed at home and William was the oldest son.

In 1582, when little more than eighteen, Shakespeare married Anne Hathaway, a farmer's daughter, who was eight years elder than himself. But Shakespeare could not think of staying forever in the village. And so one day in 1587 he said goodbye to his wife and children, and went to work in London.

In London he went straight to the theatre to get some work there. In London, Shakespeare established himself as an actor who began to write plays. Shakespeare began working in the Globe Theatre in London in 1599. In Shakespeare's day, there were no actresses, so boys played the parts of women. The plays in this theatre usually lasted for three days. Shakespeare's success in London theatres made him wealthy. His life was very hard. But he was young, talented, and romantic.

Although Shakespeare made London his home it is probable that he often visited Stratford, where his family continued to live. In 1611 he returned to Stratford twenty - six years after he had left it.In the early spring of 1616 Shakespeare's youngest daughter, was married. A month later he made his will and on April 23,1616, he died. That date, April 23, was also the date on which he was born fifty - two years before. William Shakespeare was buried in a fine old church at Stratford and over the place where he lies may still be seen the lines, written by himself: "God friend, for Jesus' sake forbear To dig the dust, enclosed here; Blessed be the man that spares these stones And cursed be he that moves my bones."
