V. CONVERSATIONAL PRACTICE

Task 1. Listen to the dialogues and practise them. Pay special attention to the underlined structures.

Will You Do Me A Favour?

Alice: Hello, Mike! Have you been waiting long? I’m so sorry I’m late.

Mike: Now when you’re here it’s all right..

Alice: I say, Mike, I’ve just had a wire from Mary. She’s coming by the five-twenty train. And I have a meeting at five. Will you do me a favour and meet her at the station?

Mike: Certainly. But I’ve never seen her. How shall I recognize her?

Alice: Oh, it’s quite easy. She’s just like her mother.

Mike: Most helpful, I’m sure. But the problem is that I’ve never seen her mother either

Alice: No, you haven’t. But I’m afraid I haven’t any photos of her.

Mike: Try to describe her. What does she look like?

Alice: A tall, slim girl of eighteen with an oval face.

Mike: Complexion?

Alice: Rather pale.

Mike: Hair?

Alice: Fair and curly. Light-gray eyes, a small snub nose, a big mouth with white even teeth and a pleasant smile.

Mike: I’m sure there’ll be at least a dozen girls like that at the station.

Alice: Oh, Mike, we’ve been discussing it for the better part of an hour and I see no end to it.

Mike: But how am I to recognize her in the crowd?

Alice: Oh, I forgot. There’s a dimple in her left cheek, she’s so lovely that you’ll fall in love with her at first sight.

Mike: That’ll help me to be sure. Go to a meeting, promise to be on a platform at five sharp, looking for a tall, slim, fair-haired, lovely girl with a dimple in her cheek.

After the Party

Bess: I say, who’s the boy I’ve been dancing with most of the time? He introduced himself but I didn’t catch the name.

Julie: Do you mean the lean stooping fellow with an awkward gait, a piercing look and a mop of sandy hair?

Bess: The one I mean isn’t like that at all. He’s tall and slender with a graceful carriage, earnest eyes and smooth blond hair.

Julie: So that’s the way he strikes you, isn’t it? Well, that’s Will, my first cousin.

Bess: Is he? Julie, say honestly, do you really find him as plain as you’ve made him out?

Julie: I was just joking. Will takes after his father, my uncle Alex, who is still very handsome, even though bald and rather stern-looking.

Bess: And as to his stooping, it was natural when dancing with a small person like myself, so much shorter than he, wasn’t it?

Julie: Well, it’s funny, but Will came up to me and asked: ‘Who’s that little bright-eyed girl with dimples in her cheeks?’

Bess: He didn’t!

Julie: He did. And he said you were the prettiest girl here.

Bess: He can’t possibly have meant it. Jane was certainly the beauty of the party.

Julie: Jane? Don’t make me laugh. Perhaps she wouldn’t look so bad if she hadn’t put on so much weight. As it is, she’s positively fat and looks rather old for her age.

Bess: No, not fat, she’s just plump. And she has wonderfully regular features and a lovely complexion.

Julie: Lovely complexion indeed! With all that powder and lipstick on you don’t see much of her natural complexion. Anyhow, I quite agree with Will that you’re much more attractive than Jane, especially now, when you wear your hair shoulder length parted in the middle.

Bess: Nice of you to say that.

Julie: Would you care to come and see me next Saturday? I’ll invite Will and two or three other girls and boys.

Bess: I’d love to, I’ll be looking forward to it. And now I’m off. Goodbye for the present.

Julie: See you again soon.

How does she/he look?

Tired, fresh, upset, happy, disappointed, sleepy, worried, pale, unwell, healthy, surprised

A.

1. They are apparently father and daughter. The gentleman is fifty, tall, well-preserved, and of upright carriage. His imposing style, with his strong aquiline nose an resolute clean-shaven mouth, gives him an air of importance.

His daughter is a well-dressed, well-fed, good-looking, strong-minded young woman, presentable ladylike, but still her father’s daughter. (From «Widowers’ House» by B. Shaw)

2. Harry, imagine a girl, hardly seventeen years of age, with a flower-like face, a small Greek head with plaited coils of dark-brown hair, eyes, eyes were violet wells of passion, lips that were like the petals of rose. She was the loveliest thing I had ever seen in my life. (From «Picture of Dorian Gray» by O. Wilde)

3. His face was deeply sunburnt, but the sun hadn’t taken the healthy colour from his cheeks. She liked the little curly moustache which didn’t conceal his full red lips. He had black hair, short and brushed very sleek. But of course his eyes under thick bushy eyebrows were his best feature. (From «The Painted Veil» by S. Maugham)

4. In the centre of the room... stood the head of the family, Old Jolyon himself. Eighty years of age, with his fine, white hair, his dome-like forehead, his little, dark, gray eyes and an immense white moustache, which drooped and spread below the level of his strong jaw, he had a particular look, and in spite of lean cheeks and hollows at his temples, seemed master of perennial youth. He held himself extremely upright, and his shrewd, steady eyes had lost none of their clear shining. Thus he gave an impression of superiority to the doubts and dislikes of smaller men. (From «The Man of Property»)

5. The colonel is a fine-looking man. His hair is white. So is his moustache. His face is cleanly shaven showing a bronzed complexion. The expression of face is kind though firm.

The colonel has three sons. Basil, the eldest of the boys, is seventeen years of age. He is a fine-looking lad though not handsome. He looks very brave and strong. His hair is straight and black. He is, in fact, the son of his father.

How very unlike him is Lucien, the second of age. Lucien is delicate, with a light complexion and very fair hair. He is more like what his mother was, for she was a blonde. The colonel's youngest son is a quick-witted, curly-haired boy - cheerful at all times.

6. Among the passengers there were two who interested me very much. One, a man of about thirty, was one of the tallest men I ever saw. He had yellow hair, a thick yellow beard, a handsome face and large eyes. His face made me think of someone I had seen before but at the time I could not remember who it was. The big man's name was Sir Henry Curtis.

The other man was short, stout and dark. He was always very neat and clean-shaven; he always wore an eye-glass in his right eye, and he never took it out. At first I thought he even slept in it, but afterwards found that this was not so. He put it in his trousers pocket when he went to bed, together with his false teeth, of which he had two beautiful sets. (H.R. Haggard)

7. Cedric was not tall, but broad-shouldered, long-armed and powerfully-made. His face was broad with large blue eyes, open and frank features, fine teeth and a well-formed head. He was frank but of a nasty temper. There was pride and jealousy in his eyes, for his life had been spent in maintaining his rights. His long yellow hair was not very grey, although he was almost sixty. (W. Scott)

8. Beatrice was a little woman but strong, active and wiry with sallow skin, sharp regular features and small, beady eyes. Her hair, suspiciously black for her age, was always very neat, and she wore it in the style of Queen Victoria. The possibility that she did something to keep her hair its original colour was, if such was the case, her only concession to frivolity, for, far from using rouge or lipstick, she had never in her life so much as passed a powder-puff over her nose. She never made regardless of fashion after a pattern that was both serviceable and decorous.
