The Siege of Kemp’s House

Kemp read a strange missive, written in pencil on a greasy sheet of paper (Кемп прочитал странное послание, написанное карандашом на засаленном листе бумаги; to read [rJd],-read [red],-read [red]).

“You have been amazingly energetic and clever (вы проявили изумительную энергию и сообразительность; energetic — энергичный, активный; clever — умный; ловкий, проворный),” this letter ran (гласило письмо), “though what you stand to gain by it I cannot imagine (хотя чего вы надеетесь этим добиться, не могу себе представить). You are against me (вы против меня). For a whole day you have chased me (весь день вы травили меня; to chase — гнаться, преследовать; травить, охотиться); you have tried to rob me of a night’s rest (вы пытались лишить меня ночного отдыха). But I have had food in spite of you (но я насытился вопреки вам), I have slept in spite of you (я выспался вопреки вам), and the game is only beginning (и игра только начинается). The game is only beginning. There is nothing for it, but to start the Terror (ничего другого не остается, кроме как прибегнуть к Террору; to start — начинать, предпринимать). This announces the first day of the Terror (это /письмо/ провозглашает первый день Террора; to announce — объявлять; сообщать, извещать, заявлять). Port Burdock is no longer under the Queen (Бердок больше не под властью королевы), tell your Colonel of Police, and the rest of them (передайте это вашему полковнику полиции и всем остальным); it is under me — the Terror (/теперь/ он под моей властью — под властью Террора)!

Kemp read a strange missive, written in pencil on a greasy sheet of paper.

“You have been amazingly energetic and clever,” this letter ran, “though what you stand to gain by it I cannot imagine. You are against me. For a whole day you have chased me; you have tried to rob me of a night’s rest. But I have had food in spite of you, I have slept in spite of you, and the game is only beginning. This is day one of year one of the new epoch (этот день — первый день первого года новой эры) — the Epoch of the Invisible Man (Эры Невидимки). I am Invisible Man the First (я — Невидимка Первый). To begin with the rule will be easy (начать править будет легко). The first day there will be one execution for the sake of example — a man named Kemp (в первый день будет /лишь/ одна показательная казнь/для острастки — человека по фамилии Кемп; example — пример; урок, назидание; предостережение). Death starts for him to-day (смерть направляется к нему сегодня). He may lock himself away (он может запираться), hide himself away (прятаться), get guards about him (окружать себя охраной), put on armour if he likes (одеваться в броню, если ему угодно) — Death, the unseen Death, is coming (Смерть, невидимая Смерть, идет к нему). Let him take precautions (пусть он принимает меры предосторожности); it will impress my people (это произведет впечатление на мой народ). Death starts from the pillar box by midday (смерть двинется из почтового ящика в полдень; pillar box — стоячий почтовый ящик). The letter will fall in as the postman comes along, then off (это письмо упадет = будет опущено в ящик перед самым приходом почтальона, и затем в путь)! The game begins (игра начинается). Death starts (смерть идет). Help him not, my people, lest Death fall upon you also (не помогайте ему, мой народ, иначе Смерть постигнет и вас; lest — чтобы не, как бы не). To-day Kemp is to die (сегодня Кемп должен умереть).”

Kemp read this letter twice (Кемп дважды прочитал это письмо), “It’s no hoax (это не шутка; hoax — обман, ложь, неправда; to play a hoax on somebody — разыграть, обмануть кого-либо),” he said. “That’s his voice (это написал он: «его голос»)! And he means it (и он намеревается сделать это).”

This is day one of year one of the new epoch — the Epoch of the Invisible Man. I am Invisible Man the First. To begin with the rule will be easy. The first day there will be one execution for the sake of example — a man named Kemp. Death starts for him to-day. To-day Kemp is to die.”

Kemp read this letter twice, “It’s no hoax,” he said. “That’s his voice! And he means it.”

He turned the folded sheet over (он перевернул сложенный листок) and saw on the addressed side of it the postmark Hintondean (и увидел на его адресной стороне почтовый штемпель «Хинтондин»), and the prosaic detail “2d. to pay” (и прозаическую деталь: «доплатить 2 пенса»; d.

He got up slowly, leaving his lunch unfinished (Кемп медленно встал, оставив завтрак незаконченным) — the letter had come by the one o’clock post (письмо пришло с часовой почтой/в час дня) — and went into his study (и вошел в кабинет). He rang for his housekeeper, and told her to go round the house at once (он позвонил экономке и велел ей немедленно обойти дом), examine all the fastenings of the windows (осмотреть все задвижки на окнах), and close all the shutters (и закрыть все ставни). He closed the shutters of his study himself From a locked drawer in his bedroom he took a little revolver (из запертого ящика в спальне он достал небольшой револьвер), examined it carefully, and put it into the pocket of his lounge jacket (тщательно его осмотрел и положил в карман приталенного пиджака). He wrote a number of brief notes, one to Colonel Adye (он написал несколько коротких записок, одну из них полковнику Эдаю), gave them to his servant to take (и поручил служанке отнести их), with explicit instructions as to her way of leaving the house (дав точные указания относительно того, как ей выйти из дома; explicit — ясный; точный, подробный). “There is no danger (нет никакой опасности),” he said, and added a mental reservation, “to you” (сказал он и прибавил мысленно: «для вас»; mental reservation — мысленная оговорка, замечание). He remained meditative for a space after doing this (некоторое время после этого он оставался задумчивым), and then returned to his cooling lunch (а потом вернулся к своему стынувшему завтраку; to cool — охлаждать/ся/, остывать).

He turned the folded sheet over and saw on the addressed side of it the postmark Hintondean, and the prosaic detail “2d. to pay.”

He got up slowly, leaving his lunch unfinished — the letter had come by the one o’clock post — and went into his study. He rang for his housekeeper, and told her to go round the house at once, examine all the fastenings of the windows, and close all the shutters. He closed the shutters of his study himself. From a locked drawer in his bedroom he took a little revolver, examined it carefully, and put it into the pocket of his lounge jacket. He wrote a number of brief notes, one to Colonel Adye, gave them to his servant to take, with explicit instructions as to her way of leaving the house. “There is no danger,” he said, and added a mental reservation, “to you.” He remained meditative for a space after doing this, and then returned to his cooling lunch.

He ate with gaps of thought Finally he struck the table sharply

“We will have him (мы его поймаем)!” he said; “and I am the bait (и я буду приманкой). He will come too far (он зайдет слишком далеко/зарвется).”

He went up to the belvedere, carefully shutting every door after him

“It’s a game (это игра),” he said, “an odd game — but the chances are all for me, Mr. Griffin (необычная игра, но все шансы на моей стороне, мистер Гриффин), in spite of your invisibility (несмотря на вашу невидимость). Griffin contra mundum (Гриффин против всего мира /лат./)... with a vengeance (сражается вовсю; with a vengeance — изо всех сил; с остервенением; вовсю, чрезвычайно; vengeance — месть, мщение).”

He stood at the window staring at the hot hillside

“He must get food every day — and I don’t envy him (ему нужно добывать пищу каждый день, и я не завидую ему). Did he really sleep last night (действительно ли он спал прошлой ночью)? Out in the open somewhere — secure from collisions (где-нибудь под открытым небом, чтобы на него никто не мог натолкнуться; secure from — защищенный от; collision — столкновение). I wish we could get some good cold wet weather instead of the heat (хотел бы я, чтобы настала холодная сырая погода вместо этой жары).

“He may be watching me now (возможно, он сейчас наблюдает за мной).”

He went close to the window Something rapped smartly against the brickwork over the frame (что-то сильно стукнуло по кирпичной стене над рамой; brickwork — кирпичная кладка; smartly — энергично, сильно, резко /о каком-либо физическом действии/), and made him start violently back (и заставило его отскочить).

“I’m getting nervous (я становлюсь нервным),” said Kemp. But it was five minutes before he went to the window again “It must have been a sparrow (должно быть, воробей),” he said.

Presently he heard the front-door bell ringing, and hurried downstairs He unbolted and unlocked the door (он отодвинул засов и отпер дверь), examined the chain, put it up (осмотрел цепь, закрепил ее), and opened cautiously without showing himself (и осторожно открыл дверь, не показываясь сам). A familiar voice hailed him (знакомый голос окликнул его; to hail — приветствовать; звать, окликать). It was Adye (это был Эдай).

“Your servant’s been assaulted, Kemp (на вашу служанку напали, Кемп),” he said round the door (сказал он из-за двери).

“What (что)!” exclaimed Kemp (воскликнул Кемп).

“Had that note of yours taken away from her (забрали у нее вашу записку). He’s close about here (он где-то рядом). Let me in (впустите меня).”

Kemp released the chain, and Adye entered through as narrow an opening as possible He stood in the hall, looking with infinite relief at Kemp refastening the door

“What!” exclaimed Kemp.

“Had that note of yours taken away from her. He’s close about here. Let me in.”

Kemp released the chain, and Adye entered through as narrow an opening as possible. He stood in the hall, looking with infinite relief at Kemp refastening the door.

“Note was snatched out of her hand (записку вырвали у нее из рук). Scared her horribly (ее страшно испугали). She’s down at the station (она сейчас в участке). Hysterics (/с ней/ истерика). He’s close here (он где-то поблизости). What was it about (о чем была записка)?”

Kemp swore (Кемп выругался; to swear).

“What a fool I was (каким же я был дураком),” said Kemp. “I might have known (мог бы догадаться). It’s not an hour’s walk from Hintondean (до Хинтондина меньше часу хода). Already (уже)?”

“What’s up (в чем дело)?” said Adye.

“Look here (вот, взгляните)!” said Kemp, and led the way into his study (сказал Кемп и повел Эдая в кабинет). He handed Adye the Invisible Man’s letter Adye read it and whistled softly

“Look here!” said Kemp, and led the way into his study. He handed Adye the Invisible Man’s letter. Adye read it and whistled softly.

“And you —?” said Adye.

“Proposed a trap — like a fool (планировал /устроить/ ловушку, и как дурак),” said Kemp, “and sent my proposal out by a maid servant (послал этот план с горничной). To him (/прямо/ ему в руки).”

“He’ll clear out (он убежит),” said Adye.

“Not he (нет, он-то не убежит),” said Kemp.

A resounding smash of glass came from upstairs (резкий, гулкий звон стекла донесся сверху; to resound — громко звучать, раздаваться; оглашаться). Adye had a silvery glimpse of a little revolver half out of Kemp’s pocket

“It’s a window, upstairs (это окно наверху)!” said Kemp, and led the way up (сказал Кемп и стал первым подниматься по лестнице).

There came a second smash while they were still on the staircase When they reached the study they found two of the three windows smashed (когда они дошли до кабинета, то обнаружили, что два окна из трех разбиты), half the room littered with splintered glass (полкомнаты засыпано разбитым стеклом = осколками), and one big flint lying on the writing table (а на письменном столе лежит большой булыжник). The two men stopped in the doorway, contemplating the wreckage (оба остановились в дверях, глядя на разрушение; to contemplate — обозревать, созерцать; пристально разглядывать). Kemp swore again, and as he did so the third window went with a snap like a pistol (Кемп снова выругался, и тут же третье окно издало резкий щелчок, будто выстрелили из пистолета; snap — треск, щелчок), hung starred for a moment, and collapsed (по нему вмиг расползлись трещины, и оно упало; starred — усеянный, усыпанный звездами; треснувший наподобие звезды) in jagged, shivering triangles into the room (зубчатыми треугольными осколками в комнату = в комнату полетели треугольные осколки; jagged — зубчатый, зазубренный; to shiver — дрожать; раскалывать/ся/, разбивать/ся/ вдребезги; shivers — обломок, осколок, кусок, часть: in shivers — вдребезги, на мелкие кусочки; triangle — треугольник).

“What’s this for (это /еще/ зачем = что такое)?” said Adye.

“It’s a beginning (это начало),” said Kemp.

“There’s no way of climbing up here (сюда нельзя никак влезть)?”

“Not for a cat (даже кошка не влезет),” said Kemp.

“No shutters (ставен нет)?”

“Not here (здесь нет). All the downstairs rooms — Hullo (во всех нижних комнатах… Ого)!”

Smash, and then whack of boards hit hard came from downstairs (звон, а за ним стук по доскам от сильного удара, донеслись снизу; whack — сильный, звучный удар; to hit hard — сильно ударять, наносить мощный удар).

“Confound him (черт бы его побрал)!” said Kemp. “That must be — yes — it’s one of the bedrooms (это, должно быть… да, это в одной из спален). He’s going to do all the house (он собирается обработать весь дом). But he’s a fool (но он дурак). The shutters are up, and the glass will fall outside (ставни закрыты, и стекло будет падать наружу). He’ll cut his feet (он изрежет себе ноги).”

“I have it (придумал)!” said Adye. “Let me have a stick or something (дайте мне палку или что-нибудь в этом роде), and I’ll go down to the station and get the bloodhounds put on (я схожу в участок и велю прислать ищеек; to put on — побуждать; включать, приводить в действие). “You haven’t a revolver (нет ли у вас револьвера)?” asked Adye.

Kemp’s hand went to his pocket Then he hesitated (потом замялся).

“I haven’t one — at least to spare (нет, по крайней мере, лишнего; spare — запасной, лишний).”

Kemp’s hand went to his pocket. Then he hesitated.

“I haven’t one — at least to spare.”

“I’ll bring it back,” said Adye, “you’ll be safe here.”

Kemp, ashamed of his momentary lapse from truthfulness (Кемп, пристыженный кратковременным отступлением от правдивости = своей ложью; lapse — упущение; моральное падение: a lapse from grace — лишение милости; a lapse from virtue — грехопадение; truth — правда, истина, правдивость), handed him the weapon (отдал ему оружие).

“Now for the door (теперь пойдемте к двери),” said Adye.

As they stood hesitating in the hall (пока они стояли в прихожей, на решаясь /подойти к двери/), they heard one of the first-floor bedroom windows crack and clash (они услышали, как одно из окон спальни на первом этаже затрещало и зазвенело; first-floor — находящийся на втором этаже /нумерация этажей в Великобритании начинается со второго/; ground floor — первый этаж). Kemp went to the door and began to slip the bolts as silently as possible His face was a little paler than usual

“You must step straight out (вы должны сразу же выйти),” said Kemp.

In another moment Adye was on the doorstep (еще секунда, и Эдай был на пороге) and the bolts were dropping back into the staples (а засовы задвигались обратно в скобы). He hesitated for a moment (он немного поколебался), feeling more comfortable with his back against the door (чувствуя себя спокойнее, прислонившись спиной к двери). Then he marched, upright and square, down the steps He crossed the lawn and approached the gate A little breeze seemed to ripple over the grass (казалось, легкий ветерок пронесся по траве; to ripple — покрывать/ся/ рябью; волновать/ся/, колыхать/ся/). Then he marched, upright and square, down the steps. He crossed the lawn and approached the gate. A little breeze seemed to ripple over the grass. Something moved near him.

“Stop a bit (подождите минуту),” said a Voice, and Adye stopped dead (сказал Голос, и Эдай остановился как вкопанный) and his hand tightened on the revolver (и его рука крепко сжала револьвер).

“Well (в чем дело)?” said Adye, white and grim, and every nerve tense (спросил Эдай, бледный и угрюмый; каждый нерв его был напряжен).

“Oblige me by going back to the house (сделайте одолжение, вернитесь в дом; to oblige — обязывать, сделать одолжение, оказать услугу),” said the Voice, as tense and grim as Adye’s (сказал Голос так же напряженно и угрюмо, как Эдай).

“Sorry (сожалею, /но не могу/),” said Adye a little hoarsely, and moistened his lips with his tongue (сказал Эдай несколько хрипло и облизнул губы; to moisten — увлажнять, смачивать; tongue — язык). The Voice was on his left front, he thought Suppose he were to take his luck with a shot

“What are you going for (куда вы идете)?” said the Voice, and there was a quick movement of the two (спросил Голос, оба сделали быстрое движение), and a flash of sunlight from the open lip of Adye’s pocket (и что-то блеснуло /на солнце/ в приоткрытом кармане Эдая; lip — губа; край, кромка).

Adye desisted and thought (Эдай отказался /от своего намерения/ и задумался; to desist — переставать; воздерживаться, отказываться от совершения).

“Where I go (куда я иду),” he said slowly (сказал он медленно), “is my own business (это мое дело).” The words were still on his lips (эти слова еще были на его губах = не успел он произнести эти слова), when an arm came round his neck, his back felt a knee (как рука обхватила его за шею, его спина ощутила колено = в спину уперлось колено), and he was sprawling backward (и он упал; to sprawl — вытянуться, растянуться, упасть). He drew clumsily and fired absurdly (он неловко вытащил револьвер и выстрелил наугад: «нелепо»), and in another moment he was struck in the mouth (в тот же миг его ударили по зубам; to strike) and the revolver wrested from his grip (а револьвер вырвали из рук). He made a vain clutch at a slippery limb (Эдай сделал тщетную /попытку/ схватиться за ускользнувшую ногу; slippery — скользкий; увертливый, юркий), tried to struggle up and fell back (попытался встать и снова упал).

“Damn (черт побери)!” said Adye. The Voice laughed (Голос рассмеялся).

“I’d kill you now if it wasn’t the waste of a bullet (я убил бы вас, если бы это не было /бесполезной/ тратой пули),” it said. He saw the revolver in mid-air, six feet off, covering him (Эдай увидел в воздухе револьвер, в шести футах от себя, нацеленный на него; to cover — прикрывать, покрывать; держать под прицелом).

Remember I can see your face if you can’t see mine You’ve got to go back to the house

“He won’t let me in (он меня не впустит),” said Adye.

“That’s a pity (жаль),” said the Invisible Man. “I’ve got no quarrel with you (я с вами не ссорился; quarrel — ссора; перебранка; раздоры).”

“Well?” said Adye, sitting up.

“Get up,” said the Voice.

Adye stood up.

“He won’t let me in,” said Adye.

“That’s a pity,” said the Invisible Man. “I’ve got no quarrel with you.”

Adye moistened his lips again He glanced away from the barrel of the revolver (он отвел взгляд от ствола револьвера) and saw the sea far off very blue and dark under the midday sun (и увидел вдалеке море, очень синее и темное в свете полуденного солнца), the smooth green down (шелковистый зеленый холм; smooth — гладкий, ровный, мягкий), the white cliff of the Head (белый мыс; cliff — отвесная скала на берегу моря; крутой склон; утес; head — голова; верхняя часть чего-либо; выступающая из воды скала; крутой выступающий в море мыс), and the multitudinous town (многолюдный город; multitudinous — многочисленный, многообразный), and suddenly he knew that life was very sweet (и вдруг он осознал, как прекрасна жизнь; sweet — сладкий; приятный, милый). His eyes came back to this little metal thing hanging between heaven and earth, six yards away

“What am I to do (что мне делать)?” he said sullenly (мрачно спросил он).

“What am I to do (а мне что делать)?” asked the Invisible Man (спросил Невидимка). “You will get help (вы приведете подмогу). The only thing is for you to go back (единственное, что вам остается, — вернуться).”

“I will try (я попытаюсь). If he lets me in will you promise not to rush the door (если он меня впустит, обещаете не врываться /за мной/)?”

“I’ve got no quarrel with you (с вами я не ссорился),” said the Voice.

Kemp had hurried upstairs after letting Adye out (Кемп поспешил наверх, после того как выпустил Эдая), and now crouching among the broken glass (и теперь, притаившись среди битого стекла) and peering cautiously over the edge of the study window sill (и осторожно выглядывая в окно кабинета), he saw Adye stand parleying with the Unseen (он увидел, как Эдай стоит и разговаривает с Невидимкой; to parley — обсуждать, договариваться, вести переговоры).

“Why doesn’t he fire (почему он не стреляет)?” whispered Kemp to himself (шепотом спросил себя Кемп). Then the revolver moved a little (тут револьвер немного переместился) and the glint of the sunlight flashed in Kemp’s eyes (и отраженный солнечный свет сверкнул Кемпу в глаза; to glint — вспыхивать, сверкать; отражать свет). He shaded his eyes and tried to see the source of the blinding beam

“Surely (так и есть; surely — конечно, несомненно)!” he said, “Adye has given up the revolver (Эдай отдал револьвер).”

“Promise not to rush the door (обещайте не врываться за вной),” Adye was saying (говорил Эдай). “Don’t push a winning game too far (не заводите выигрышное дело слишком далеко = не увлекайтесь своей удачей). Give a man a chance (дайте человеку шанс).”

“Surely!” he said, “Adye has given up the revolver.”

“Promise not to rush the door,” Adye was saying. “Don’t push a winning game too far. Give a man a chance.”

“You go back to the house (возвращайтесь в дом). I tell you flatly I will not promise anything (говорю вам прямо: я ничего не обещаю; flatly — категорически, решительно, прямо, откровенно; flat — плоский).”

Adye’s decision seemed suddenly made He turned towards the house, walking slowly with his hands behind him Kemp watched him — puzzled The revolver vanished, flashed again into sight, vanished again (револьвер исчез, снова сверкнул, опять исчез), and became evident on a closer scrutiny as a little dark object following Adye (и стал видимым для более пристального взгляда как маленький темный предмет, следовавший за Эдаем; scrutiny — внимательный осмотр; наблюдение; внимательный, испытующий взгляд). Then things happened very quickly Adye leapt backwards, swung around (Эдай отпрыгнул назад, развернулся; to leap; to swing), clutched at this little object, missed it (/попытался/ схватить этот маленький предмет, промахнулся), threw up his hands and fell forward on his face (вскинул руки и упал лицом вниз/ничком), leaving a little puff of blue in the air (а в воздухе осталось маленькое синее облачко; puff — дуновение /ветра/; дым, дымок; клуб, облако /дыма, пара/). Kemp did not hear the sound of the shot Adye writhed, raised himself on one arm, fell forward, and lay still

Kemp did not hear the sound of the shot. Adye writhed, raised himself on one arm, fell forward, and lay still.

For a space Kemp remained staring at the quiet carelessness of Adye’s attitude The afternoon was very hot and still (день был очень жаркий и безветренный), nothing seemed stirring in all the world (казалось, ничто не движется: «не шевелится» во всем мире = весь мир замер) save a couple of yellow butterflies chasing each other through the shrubbery between the house and the road gate (только две желтые бабочки гонялись друг за другом в кустах между домом и калиткой; shrubbery — кустарник; аллея, обсаженная кустарником). Adye lay on the lawn near the gate The blinds of all the villas down the hill-road were drawn (шторы во всех домах на холме были спущены), but in one little green summer-house was a white figure (но в одной маленькой зеленой беседке виднелась белая фигура), apparently an old man asleep (по-видимому, спавшего старика). Kemp scrutinised the surroundings of the house for a glimpse of the revolver, but it had vanished (Кемп внимательно всматривался в прилегающую к дому территорию, пытаясь разглядеть револьвер, но он исчез; surroundings — окрестности, среда, окружение; glimpse — мелькание, проблеск; быстрый взгляд: to have/catch a glimpse of — увидеть мельком). His eyes came back to Adye The game was opening well

Then came a ringing and knocking at the front door, that grew at last tumultuous (тут во входную дверь начали звонить и стучать, и наконец эти звуки стали очень яростными и настойчивыми; tumultuous — шумный, буйный, бурный; возбужденный), but pursuant to Kemp’s instructions the servants had locked themselves into their rooms (но в соответствии с распоряжениями Кемпа слуги заперлись по своим комнатам). This was followed by a silence

Then came a ringing and knocking at the front door, that grew at last tumultuous, but pursuant to Kemp’s instructions the servants had locked themselves into their rooms. This was followed by a silence.

Kemp sat listening and then began peering cautiously out of the three windows (Кемп посидел, прислушиваясь, потом начал осторожно выглядывать в окна), one after another (в одно за другим, в каждое из трех). He went to the staircase head and stood listening uneasily He armed himself with his bedroom poker (он вооружился кочергой из спальни), and went to examine the interior fastenings of the ground-floor windows again (и снова отправился проверять внутренние запоры окон первого этажа). Everything was safe and quiet He returned to the belvedere Adye lay motionless over the edge of the gravel just as he had fallen Coming along the road by the villas were the housemaid and two policemen

Everything was deadly still The three people seemed very slow in approaching He wondered what his antagonist was doing

He started (Кемп вздрогнул). There was a smash from below He hesitated and went downstairs again Suddenly the house resounded with heavy blows and the splintering of wood He heard a smash and the destructive clang of the iron fastenings of the shutters He turned the key and opened the kitchen door As he did so, the shutters, split and splintering, came flying inward He stood aghast (он остановился, объятый ужасом).

The window frame, save for one crossbar, was still intact (оконная рама, кроме одной перекладины, по-прежнему была целой), but only little teeth of glass remained in the frame (но в ней остались лишь зубцы стекла). The shutters had been driven in with an axe (ставни были разрублены топором; to drive in — вгонять, вбивать), and now the axe was descending in sweeping blows upon the window frame (и теперь топор со всего размаху ударял по оконной раме: «опускался размашистыми ударами на раму») and the iron bars defending it (и железной решетке, защищавшей окно). Then suddenly it leapt aside and vanished He saw the revolver lying on the path outside (Кемп увидел револьвер, лежавший на дорожке во дворе), and then the little weapon sprang into the air (и тут это маленькое оружие подскочило в воздух). He dodged back (Кемп отпрыгнул назад). The revolver cracked just too late (револьвер выстрелил лишь на миг позднее), and a splinter from the edge of the closing door flashed over his head (и щепка от края закрывающейся двери пролетела над головой Кемпа). He slammed and locked the door (он захлопнул дверь и запер ее /на ключ/), and as he stood outside he heard Griffin shouting and laughing (и, стоя за ней, услышал, как Гриффин закричал и засмеялся). Then the blows of the axe with its splitting and smashing consequences, were resumed

Kemp stood in the passage trying to think In a moment the Invisible Man would be in the kitchen This door would not keep him a moment, and then —

A ringing came at the front door again It would be the policemen He ran into the hall, put up the chain, and drew the bolts He made the girl speak before he dropped the chain (он заставил горничную говорить, до того, как снял цепь = окликнул горничную и, услышав ее голос, снял цепь), and the three people blundered into the house in a heap (и все трое кучей ввалились в дом), and Kemp slammed the door again (и Кемп снова захлопнул дверь).

“The Invisible Man!” said Kemp. “He has a revolver, with two shots — left (у него револьвер, осталось два заряда). He’s killed Adye (он убил Эдая). Shot him anyhow (во всяком случае, подстрелил его). Didn’t you see him on the lawn (вы не видели его на лужайке)? He’s lying there (он там лежит).”

Kemp stood in the passage trying to think. In a moment the Invisible Man would be in the kitchen. This door would not keep him a moment, and then —

A ringing came at the front door again. It would be the policemen. He ran into the hall, put up the chain, and drew the bolts. He made the girl speak before he dropped the chain, and the three people blundered into the house in a heap, and Kemp slammed the door again.

“The Invisible Man!” said Kemp. “He has a revolver, with two shots — left. He’s killed Adye. Shot him anyhow. Didn’t you see him on the lawn? He’s lying there.”

“Who (кто)?” said one of the policemen (спросил один из полисменов).

“Adye,” said Kemp.

“We came in the back way (мы прошли окольным путем),” said the girl.

“What’s that smashing (что это за шум)?” asked one of the policemen.

“He’s in the kitchen — or will be (он в кухне… или будет там /скоро/). He has found an axe — (он нашел топор…)”

Suddenly the house was full of the Invisible Man’s resounding blows on the kitchen door The girl stared towards the kitchen, shuddered (служанка взглянула в сторону кухни, вздрогнула), and retreated into the dining-room (и попятилась в столовую; to retreat — отступать, отходить; удаляться). Kemp tried to explain in broken sentences They heard the kitchen door give

“Who?” said one of the policemen.

“Adye,” said Kemp.

“He’s in the kitchen — or will be. He has found an axe — ”

Suddenly the house was full of the Invisible Man’s resounding blows on the kitchen door. The girl stared towards the kitchen, shuddered, and retreated into the dining-room. Kemp tried to explain in broken sentences. They heard the kitchen door give.

“This way (сюда),” said Kemp, starting into activity (сказал Кемп, начиная действовать), and bundled the policemen into the dining-room doorway (и втолкнул полисменов в столовую; to bundle — связывать в узел; запихивать; спроваживать; bundle — узел).

“Poker (кочерга),” said Kemp, and rushed to the fender (крикнул он и бросился к каминной решетке). He handed the poker he had carried to the policeman and the dining-room one to the other He suddenly flung himself backward

“Whup!” said one policeman, ducked («Оп!», сказал один полисмен, пригибаясь), and caught the axe on his poker (и поймал топор кочергой). The pistol snapped its penultimate shot and ripped a valuable Sidney Cooper (револьвер выпустил предпоследний заряд и пробил ценное /полотно/ Сиднея Купера; to rip — рвать/ся/, распарывать/ся/; Sidney Cooper — Сидней Купер /1803 — 1902/, английский художник). The second policeman brought his poker down on the little weapon (второй полисмен ударил своей кочергой по маленькому оружию; to bring down — свалить, сломать; сбить), as one might knock down a wasp (как бьют, чтобы убить осу = будто хотел прибить осу; to knock — ударять/ся/, стучать/ся/; сбивать), and sent it rattli
