TASK: WRITING A COMPARATIVE FILM REVIEW

You write for an international student magazine. The editor has asked you for a review recommending two films (‘Devil Wears Prada’ and ‘The Bling Ring’) one for adults and the other for younger audience. You should comment on the plot and the acting and explain why the films are suitable for each age group.

The points that should be included in a film review

a. an introduction naming the film and its genre

b. a summary of the plot

c. comments on special features

d. a biography of the lead actors

e. a description of the costumes

f. a recommendation about whether or not to see the film

g. a conclusion summarizing who the film is suitable for

Use some of these expressions:

a. It’s a gripping/slow-moving/action-packed story

b. The plot is far-fetched/intriguing/predictable

c. The final scenes are thrilling/spine-chilling/spectacular

d. The script is witty/natural/awkward

e. The acting is superb/wooden/uninspired/unconvincing

f. The lead actor/actress gives a tremendous/mediocre/fantastic performance

g. The specific effects are amazing/stunning/disappointing

The model answer:

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest and Sin City are both highly enjoyable movies. However, they will appeal to very different audiences.

Dead Man’s Chest is a gripping adventure story, packed with laughs. Ruthless pirate hunter Lord Beckett (tom Hollander) sets out to retrieve the fabled Dead Man’s chest. This will give him power over Davy Jones, the heartless villain who rules the seas. It will also allow him to destroy the Pirates of the Caribbean. But pirate captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) and his courageous companions Will (Orlando Bloom) and Elizabeth (Keira Knightley) are out to stop him. The acting is superb. Bill Nighy gives a haunting performance as Davy Jones, his face sprouting octopus tentacles. But Johnny Depp steals the show, turning his rolling eyes, flashing gold teeth and mischievous grin.

Sin City is a much more bloodthirsty affair. Set in a crime-infested city, the plot has three storylines. Street fighter Marv (Mickey Rourke) is searching for the murderer of a seductive woman, killed while sleeping beside him; ex-photographer Dwight (Clive Owen) has accidentally killed a cop and is trying to cover it up; and tough cop Hartigan (Bruce Willis) is framed for a crime he did not commit. The cast is wonderful, especially Rourke who delivers one of the most outstanding performances of his career.

Either of these films would make a great evening’s entertainment. Dead Man’s Chest is a family film with something for everyone, but Sin City, with its adult themes, extreme violence, and bad language, is definitely not a film for the kids!

FASHION SHOWS

http://www.tvrage.com/Project_Runway

Тhis season of the Emmy-nominated, premier reality series focusing on fashion designers, Project Runway will pit sixteen designers against one another on the Road to the Runway. These contestants will compete in weekly design challenges at Parsons The New School For Design in New York City, until only three remain and face off once again at New York Fashion Week in February.

Eager to give aspiring designers a chance to break into the notoriously difficult-to-crack fashion world, supermodel Heidi Klum will once again head a panel of industry luminaries, including top women's and men's wear designer Michael Kors and Elle Magazine fashion director Nina Garcia, who will serve as judges and industry mentors charged with selecting and molding the budding designers. There will also be guest judges each week based on the specific challenge. Tim Gunn, Chair of the Parsons The New School For Design, will return to guide the contestants through each of their challenges.

The winning designer will walk away with $100,000 in seed money to help them launch their own line. The winner’s designs will be featured in a spread in ELLE, photographed by the magazine's world-renowned Publication Director, Gilles Bensimon. They will also receive a mentorship from the Banana Republic Design Team.

WHAT NOT TO WEAR IN US

Two fashion stylists and a team of hair and makeup advisors help revamp the look of individuals who have been nominated by their friends for makeovers due to their lamentable appearance, using a $5,000 budget.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0393009/

Summary: TLC's What Not To Wear is a spin off of What Not To Wear airing on BBC America. The reality show premise is simple: friends and family members nominate a candidate that they consider poorly dressed and ask the show to make over the "fashion victim." Fashion Police Stacy London and her partner, Clinton Kelly (or Wayne Scott Lukas in the first season) ambush the candidate and make them an offer-- they are given a $5000.00 budget for a new wardrobe, which they must purchase in New York City boutiques over the course of two days, but only on the condition that they allow Stacy & Clinton/ Wayne to critique, and in most cases throw out, their existing wardrobe. For grooming tips, hairdresser Nick Arrojio and makeup artist Carmindy help refine the candidate's look.
