Glossary:

· To have a great talent for (teaching) to have a natural ability to do sth. well

· To capture sb’s attention – to make someone feel very interested and attracted.

· To provide an incentive [in'sentiv] (for learning) – to provide something that encourages you to do sth, especially because you will get sth in return. SYNS motivation – the reason why sb does sth or behaves in a particular way; sth that makes sb want to be successful, stimulus – something that helps or encourages sb to start or to develop better or more quickly. Opp. disincentive – something that makes you less willing to do sth, especially because you will not gain much if you do.

· To assert one’s authority – to behave in a determined way. Noun assertion – something that you say or write that you strongly believe. Adj. assertive - behaving in a confident way so that people notice you.

· To get adjusted (to) – to gradually get used to a new situation by making small changes to the way you do things.

· To pass over (petty offences) - to ignore, not to spend time discussing sth.

· To put sb. off -to discourage, to make you dislike sth or not want to dosth.

· To tell sb.off – to talk angrily to someone because they have done sth wrong. SYNS to scold – to tell sb, especially a child, that you disapprove of sth that they have done; to lecture (disapproving ) – to criticize sb or tell them how you think they should behave, especially when it is done in an annoying way; to reprimand ['reprima:nd] (formal) – to tell sb officially that you disapprove of their actions, especially if they have broken a rule or law. Note: Scold is the most frequent in written English, particularly in stories, but it is not used much in spoken English. Tell sb off is by far the most frequent in spoken British English but it is not used much in written English or American English.

· To notify ['nəutifai] ( sb’s parents) – to formally or officially tell someone about something; inform.

· To summon ( the wrong-doer’s parents to the school) – to officially order someone to come to a meeting.

· To detain (the wrong-doer after class) ( formal)– to delay sb or prevent them from going somewhere.

· To sentence ( the wrong-doer to some work) to say officially that sb is to receive a particular punishment.

UNIT 5: ESTABLISHING ORDER AND DISCIPLINE

Glossary:

· To maintain (order, discipline) (rather formal) – to make sth continue at the same level or standard. SYN. to keep discipline, order, to preserve order.

· To establish order – to create the situation when people obey rules, laws or authority.

· To take firm action – to act with a particular purpose or in order to deal with a situation

· To take sb in hand – to bring someone or something under control.

· To forbid sb to do sth (rather formal) - to order sb not to do sth, to order that sth must not be done. Opp. allow, permit. SYNS ban – to officially stop sth from being done, prohibit (formal) – to stop sth from being done, especially by law, bar (rather formal) – to ban or prevent sb from doing sth, outlaw – to forbid sth by law.
