Novosibirsk

Novosibirsk, the largest city in Siberia, is situated on both banks of the river Ob. Its foundation is associated with the name of the well – known railway engineer and writer N.Garin – Mikhailovsky. In 1893 hi began to build the Trans-Siberian Railway bridge across the Ob. Nowadays the square in front of the railway station is named after him.

Novosibirsk began as a small settlement, now it is a giant city. It is the third largest city in Russia after Moscow and St. Petersburg. More than 1.5 million people live in its 10 districts.

Novosibirsk is an important industrial centre. Here there are many plants and factories producing heavy machine – tools, powerful generators, farm machinery, electronic equipment aircrafts and so on.

Our city is the largest railway junction in the eastern part of the country, it also has on international airport, a river port, a bas station. It is first town in the eastern part of the country which has an underground railway opened in 1986.

Today Novosibirsk is a big educational, cultural and scientific centre know beyond the of Russia to scientific and cultural figures. There are many higher and special technical establishments, colleges and secondary schools. As a major cultural centre the city has several theatres, a philharmonic society, a lot of cinemas, many libraries, a documentary film studio, an Art Museum with a fine collection of paintings and sculptures. The State Scientific and Technical Library, opened in 1966, is one of the largest in Russia.

As a scientific centre our city is famous throughout the world. Akademgorodok with its 20 research institutes is the seat of three Academies: the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Scientific, the Siberian Branch of VASHNIL and the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences.

Akademgorodok

Novosibirsk is called the city of three Academies: the Siberian Branch of VASHNIL, the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences and the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

The construction of Akademgorodok began in 1957. Its foundation is associated with famous academician M. Lavrentiev, the first President of the SBRAS.

Akademgorodok in Metropolitan Novosibirsk is more like a resort than a center of science with 22 institutes employing 25,000 in laboratories, research and technological projects. Actually a separate city with 56,000 population, Akademgorodok is cut out of a birch and forest, with the general appearance of a well-ordered university town.

Akademgorodok is actually a group of well equipped scientific institutions. They include institutes specializing in nuclear physics, organic chemistry, geology, geophysics and others. There is also Novosibirsk State University, a physics and mathematics school and a chemistry school for talented children, the computer center, the geological and mineralogical museum, the botanic gardens, the House of Scientists, a library, a hotel and a shopping center.

Akademgorodok is very attractively looking. It has a style of its own. Akademgorodok is built right in the middle of the forest. This town extending on the shore of a man-made sea has preserved the pine-wood and birch coppices with sails on the sea, symphony music in the concert hall with the tests of the Hydrodynamics Institute.
