WHY, WHEN AND HOW PEOPLE TRAVEL?

People travel on business or for pleasure. Usually they travel when they are on vacation. When people have business trips, they travel light (without much of luggage); when they wish to become tourists, they go to a travel agency and buy a tour. They may travel by air, train, boat, bus or by car. Young people may travel by bicycle or go hitch-hiking (stopping cars and moving along in the car for some distance, then change the car). Before booking your foreign holiday make sure you have an insurance policy. When you are abroad you should have some currency on you. All goods must be paid for in foreign currency only. The visa is the most essential thing. You can’t enter the country without it. When tourists arrive at the place of their destinationthey stay in hotels, motels (if they arrived in their own car), guesthouses or B&Bs. When in a big historical city tourists buy and study maps and tour guidesof the city.

Today people have lots of good reasons to travel. Travelling has always been a part of people’s education. The best way to study geography is to travel and the best way to get to know the traditions and customs of different peoples is to speak to them. Besides, travelling is a good way to practice foreign languages.

It’s always interesting to discover new places and new ways of life, to try foreign food and to listen to unusual music. It’s much better than sitting at home and doing nothing. When on a holiday tourists enjoy sunbathing, scuba diving, swimming, windsurfing, rafting, hiking, climbing the mountains, shopping, buying souvenirs, going sightseeing, going on excursions, taking pictures, visiting museums and picture galleries, going to theatres, cinemas, discoes and so on.

FOUR DREAM HOLIDAYS for the 21st century
A* See a Penguin This is a once-in-a-lifetime holiday in the snow and ice of the Antarctic. You visit the isolated places the great explorers discovered and you can see animals and birds you only normally see on TV or in Zoos. The trip starts in South Africa and finishes in Western Australia. You travel on a Russian ship, Kapitan Khlebnikov and he holiday lasts for just under a month. B* Go on Safari This holiday is a safari with a difference. You travel by helicopter over parts of Kenya, listening to classical music as you fly, and then you sleep under the African stars in a luxury bed. There’s another trip, this time in a hot-air balloon for two people, which gives you a second chance to see wild animals in their natural habitat. The best moment is the Elephant Watch in Samburu, where your experienced guide can tell you all about these amazing animals. C* Fly high This is probably the most expensive holiday in the world. You can go on flight into space and orbit the Earth in a spaceship – if you have the money! The only problem with this holiday is the six-day training course before you take the trip. You travel 60 miles above the Earth for between 30 and 90 minutes and you get a beautiful view of our green and blue planet. D* live like robinson crusoe If you dream of life on a desert island, then this is the holiday for you. The island of Quilalea is off the coast of Mozambique and the only inhabitants are turtles and a few tourists. You can live like Robinson Crusoe, watch the turtles, go fishing, or sail to another island to have a picnic.

Grammar (Prepositions)

WRITING

14. a) Study the following information

When we write an article about the shopping facilities in a big city, we can divide it into four paragraphs.

In the first paragraph, we state the name of the city and the types of shops you can find there.

In the second paragraph, we state the names of the best shops, where they are and what we can buy there.

In the third paragraph, we state the opening hours and the sales times.

In the last paragraph, we recommend the place to shoppers. We normally use the present simple in such articles. We give the article an interesting title to attract the reader’s attention.

b) You have been asked to write an article for a travel magazine about the shopping facilities in Volgograd. Use the text in 2 as a model to write your article (100 -150 words).

The Road to Katmandu.

Susan and Jeremy, with another boy and a girl, are planning a trip next month to the Middle East, India and Nepal. They are going to travel overland, taking buses and hitch-hiking. They will find cheap lodgings wherever they can, and if necessary they will sleep under the stars. They will have very little money. Sir Eric is worried.

“I don’t like to think of Susan and other girl going all that way with two inexperienced boys. How will they manage if anything goes wrong?” he said Hester.

“I’d willingly help to pay for the trip if they’d agree to sleep in decent hotels.”

“You know she won’t accept any money from you,” said Hester. “Besides, the road to Katmandu is pretty well-worn these days. They’ll meet plenty of other young people doing the same trip.”

The longing to get off the beaten track – away from western civilization – is strong among many young people. Before going up to university and during university holidays, many British students drive, trek and fly into the far corners of Africa and Asia.

decent - приличный, подходящий; well-worn – (зд.) хорошо изученный; longing - страстное желание; beaten track - избитый, хорошо известный путь; trek – путешествие.

b) Read the following words and ideas about hitch-hiking. Put them into two groups: for and against.

the parents are worried; away from civilization; meeting with other young people; little money; inexperienced boys; well-worn road; cheap lodging; if something goes wrong; get off the beaten tracks.

Visit Malta

Malta is a tiny island in the heart of the Mediterranean Sea. It has a wonderful climate with sunny days for most of the year. Because of its great weather, lots of sightseers visit the island in the summer. They can make the most of the beaches and water sports that are available. Malta also has a rich history which is reflected in the many historical spots and places of interest. For example, Malta has some of the oldest stone temples in the world. The Maltese way of life is laid-back and the people are friendly. Malta has its own unique cuisine – you should definitely try out some of the local dishes when you visit. As Malta is so small, it is very simple to travel around and the island has cheap and regular bus service. There are plenty of traditional, little villages to explore and must visit the historical towns like Valletta and Mdina, where you can enjoy the beautiful architecture. Malta has it! For such a small country there certainly is a lot packed * into it. And my favourite thing to! Having some chocolate cake and coffee while you enjoy the sweeping* views of the island from Fontanella restaurant in Mdina.

· packed – переполненный

· sweeping – беглый, обзорный

A The City Refuge

This Refuge was started in the 19th century in the East End of London. Traditionally, the East End has always been the poorest part of London and the people who started this Refuge helped those who had no money, and nowhere to sleep. The Refuge still runs today on the same basis. There is no charge to stay there, and there is even tea and toast in the morning. But the people who have been drinking alcohol or taking drugs are not accepted. They will only take people who are in desperate need of somewhere to sleep.

B Long Term Hotels

There are several streets around an area of London called King’s Cross that only have this type of accommodation. They used to be for tourists who wanted to be centrally located. But this has now changed. King’s Cross has become an area famous for crime of all kinds, and tourists are advised not to go there at all. Long Term Hotels are quite cheap and have a bed and a wash-basin in the room. They are often dirty, damp and dangerous. You can stay there for a long time, but these hotels are not for the clean-living visitors!

C The Bayswater Hotels

This area of London is a few minutes’ bus away from Hyde Park. The hotels are reasonably priced and the area is a safe one which attracts many tourists. The Bayswater Hotels are small hotels with a warm, friendly atmosphere. The rooms are kept very clean and have the tea-tray which enables guests to make themselves a cup of tea or coffee at no extra charge. These hotels have a bar and a restaurant which can be used by people who are not even staying in the hotel.

D The YMCA

The Young Men’s Christian Association has a very impressive complex in the heart of London’ West End. Originally the YMCA met together for religious studies, but it has now grown into a huge organization. The YMCA has some of the best facilities in London with a gym, squash courts and a swimming pool. It is a long term hotel and many residents stay there for months. The rooms are very comfortably furnished and have their own bathroom. It rather expensive to live, but if you want lots of things to do and want to meet lots of people in a safe, central environment, then this is for you.

E The Dorchester Hotel

The Dorchester, situated in the heart of London, is one of the most luxurious and expensive hotels in the world. The services they offer are the best you can find, from serving you tea to driving you around London. The staff have a strict dress-code and always wear a uniform. The rooms are absolutely luxurious, with televisions, Jacuzzis, a fully-stocked bar, fresh flowers and fruit. Definitely a hotel for people with taste and a large bank account.

(AT THE RESTAURANT)

1. a) Look at the text below. Based on the title of the book, what do you think the book is about?

How to lose weight quickly

How to live more healthily

b) Read the text and check your answer.

FOOD AROUND THE WORLD

For 99% of human history people took their food from the world around them. They ate all that they could find and then moved on. Then about 10.000 years ago, or for 1% of human history, people learnt to farm the land and control their environment.

The kind of food we eat depends on which part of the world we live in, or which part of our country we live in. For example, in the south of China they eat rice, but in the north they eat noodles. In Scandinavia, they eat a lot of herrings, and the Portuguese love sardines. But in central Europe, away from the sea, people don’t eat so much fish, they eat more meat and sausages. In Germany and Poland there are hundreds of different kinds of sausages.

In North America, Australia, and Europe there are two or more courses to every meal and people eat with knifes and forks. In China there is only one course, all the food is together on the table, and they eat with chopsticks. In parts of India and the Middle East people use their fingers and bread to pick up the food.

Nowadays it is possible to transport food easily from one part of the world to the other. We can eat what we like, at any time of the year. Our bananas come from the Caribbean or Africa, our rice comes from India or the USA, our strawberries come from Chile or Spain. Food is very big business. But people in poor countries are still hungry, and people in rich countries eat too much.

b) Answer the questions.

1 When did human history start? Was it about 10,000 years ago or was it about 1 million years ago?

2 Do they eat much rice in the south of China?

3 Why do the Scandinavians and the Portuguese eat a lot of fish?

4 Why don’t the Germans eat much fish?

5 Which countries have many kinds of sausages?

6 How many courses are there in China?

7 How do people eat in the Middle East?

8 Why can we eat strawberries at any time of the year?
