3.1.3.1.1. The absolute situational index of FAH is the difference between the activation of left and right hemispheres. It is calculated by way of subtracting the quantity of AH of a right hemisphere from the quantity of AH of a left hemisphere. If the result has “+” sign it is put down into column 6, if it has “-“ sign – into column 7, and if it is equal to zero – into columns 6 and 7 of table 7 simultaneously.

3.1.3.1.2. Then calculate the relative situational index of FAH according to the Following formula:

 

           AHleft - AHright

FAH = ------------------------ x 100 %                  (3),

           AHleft + AHright

 

Where FAH – functional asymmetry of hemispheres,

AHleft – activation of left hemisphere,

AHright – activation of right hemisphere.

 

Put down the results into column 9, table 7.

 

3.1.3.2. Individually typological index of FAH is calculated as an arithmetic mean of a number of FAH indexes in background situations according to the Following formula:

 

         FAHb1+FAHb2+FAHb3+FAHb4

Where FAHt – individually typological index of FAH,

FAHb – the index of situational FAH in background conditions,

h – the number of results of investigations of background FAH.

 

3.1.3.3. Activity-stereotyped index of FAH is calculated as an arithmetic mean of a number of FAH indexes in the process of professional or other investigated activity.

When calculating individually typological and activity-stereotyped indexes of FAH the results with left-hemisphere displacement should be marked by “+” sign, while the results with right-hemisphere displacement should be marked by “-” sign. Then it is necessary to subtract the sum of right-hemisphere displacements from the sum of left-hemisphere displacements. If the result has “+” sign, you may speak about the left hemisphere displacement of final index of FAH and if it has “-” sign - about the right hemisphere displacement of final index of FAH.

For example, it is necessary to calculate an individually typological index of FAH according to the Following five measurements of background FAH:

1) right-hemisphere displacement of FAH to 24 % (FAHb 1 = - 24),

2) left-hemisphere displacement of FAH to 5 % (FAHb 2 = + 5),

3) right-hemisphere displacement of FAH to 19 % (FAHb 3 = - 19),

4) the absence of FAH displacement (FAHb 4 = 0),

5) right-hemisphere displacement of FAH to 2 % (FAHb 5 = - 2).

Having put down the obtained figures of FAH into the formula (4) we get:

 

          (-24) + (+5) + (-19) + 0 + (-2)      (- 40)

Taking into account that the result has “ - ” sign it testifies to a right-hemisphere displacement of typological characteristics of FAH.

 

The interpretation of results

 

3.1.4.1. The index of activation of this or that hemisphere tells about the degree of excitation and the number of activated neurons.

It is very difficult to tell about a normal or deviated from norm index of AH of a separately taken hemisphere because of the factor of FAH. That’s why a quantitative criterion of the diagnostics of FAH is appropriate only in relation to the summary activation of both hemispheres, which is more thoroughly described in § 2 of this chapter.

3.1.4.2. When interpreting any index of FAH you should take into account the sign and the quantity of the result in percentage.

 3.1.4.2.1. Sign “+” testifies to a left-hemisphere displacement of FAH, and sign “-” – to a right-hemisphere displacement.

3.1.4.2.2. The quantity of FAH should be interpreted in accordance with a universal diagnostic scale of asymmetries and deltas 2.1, which is presented in appendix 2.

3.1.4.2.3. The predominance of left-hemisphere activation of right-handed people testifies to the predominance of abstract-logical component of thinking over the emotional figurative one. The predominance of right-hemisphere activation tells about the predominance of emotional figurative component of thinking over the abstract-logical one.

 

Some possible ways of practical usage of the method

And the results of diagnostics

The results of the diagnostics of activation and FAH can be used:

· when defining qualitative peculiarities of psycho-emotional states (see chapter IV);

· when defining qualitative peculiarities of emotional sensitivity (see paragraph 1 of chapter IV);

· when defining the type of thinking and the peculiarities of situational thinking (see paragraph 6 of chapter V);

· when defining the peculiarities of cognitive self-regulation (see paragraph 7 of chapter V);

· when defining the characteristics of influences: suggestive, musical (see chapter VIII).
