The content of Russian religious philosophy was always connected with theology, history and social position of the Russian Orthodox Church. In the middle ages most of the Russian thinkers were members of the Church, and they discussed not only theological, but also social, political and general philosophical questions. In later and modern periods in the development of religious thought, on the contrary, secular thinkers developed their theories, referring to religious themes. As theology became the basis for the development of religious philosophy, it is necessary to get a general idea of theological tradition developed in the middle ages. As it has mentioned already, medieval philosophy was characterized by the central position of theology in the structure of knowledge. The philosophers of the middle ages, such as John Damascene (near 675-753), Peter Damiani (1006-1072), claimed that the philosophy was the “handmaiden of philosophy”. Philosophical Christian theology manifested in two main forms: writings of the early fathers and scholasticism. The teaching of church Fathers is called Patristics. The most revered Church fathers were Basil the Great (330-379), Gregory the Theologian (the Nazianzus, approximately 325-389), John Chrysostom (about 347-407). The Church fathers have shaped Christian Canon. They have separated the divinely inspired texts (the Bible as the Old Testament and New Testament) from the apocryphal texts (non-biblical early Christian and late Jewish texts on biblical themes) and hagiograpthy, a genre of literature that has been devoted to the biographies of Christian saints. Scholasticism was the philosophical direction of the theological thought of the middle ages. The name of this cultural phenomenon came from the word “school” and it was symbolized by a detailed studies and completeness of the dry style and stable forms. Scholasticism solved the problems of proving the existence of God, the presence of evil in the world and theodicy, the justification of God for the presence of evil in the world. The works of John Damascene was an example of the early scholasticism into theological Byzantine thought. John Damascene in his “Source of knowledge”, which was consisted of such parts as “Dialectics, or philosophical chapters”, “Against the heresies” (in this book he advocated the veneration of icon and struggled with the iconoclasts) and “An Exact exposition of the Orthodox faith” contributed to conservation of the Church worship. In the medieval period of the development of the Russian religious thought the translation of the books of John Damascene into Church Slavonic language was made by John the Exarch of the Bulgarian (10th century) and then on Russian language by A.M. Kurbsky (16th century). Russian philosophical thought originated in the context of a Christian philosophical tradition. Greek thinkers, brothers Cyril (827-869) and Methodius (815-885), were the founders of the Slavic philosophical tradition, they invented a Slavic alphabet based on the Greek and old Slavic ones, and translated the Scriptures and Liturgy in Church Slavonic language. If Western Christian theology has been formed in the walls of European universities, the Russian philosophical and theological tradition has grown up under monastic culture of literacy. Especially outstanding representatives of the book’s culture were the Kiev Metropolitan Ilarion, as well as theologians of Kiev monastery in Caves, which was an important publishing center of Ancient Russia. Such figures of ancient Russian culture, as Nestor the Chronicler, Yaroslav the Wise, Vladimir Monomakh, Antony and Theodosias of the Kiev monastery in Caves laid the cornerstones in the foundation for the construction of the ancient Russian culture. It was typical for the medieval period, that many philosophical and theological ancient Russian texts had no authorship or they were collective creativity. An example of ancient Russian philosophical text was a book called “The Bee”, preserved in manuscript versions of the 12th-18th centuries. This text contained the statements of classical and Christian philosophers and consisted of several parts, for example, “Truth and Lies”, “The philosophy and training of children”. Another example of ancient philosophical text was “Diopter” by Philip the Hermit. The text of the Byzantine author of the 11th century, devoted to natural philosophy, obtained spread to Russia after the translation into the Slavonic language in the 14th century and became the most fundamental anthropological essay. The earliest surviving copy of this text in Old Russian language dates from about the year 1471. At its heart there is a dialogue of the soul, acting as mistress, and the flesh, playing the role of a maid that demonstrates the ethical preferences of the author. Another popular Old Russian philosophical text called “The Interpretation of antiquity”. The text dates from the early 13th century, although the earliest surviving copy dates from 1406. This text was presented in a humanistic idea of Christian Neoplatonism. The development of Russian religious thought was also reflected in folk art, in genre of tales and legends. The Orthodox theological notion that God’s kingdom will come on Earth in flesh, was most clearly illustrated with such legend as “A Story and a quest on sacred city of Kitezh”. This chronicle consists of two parts and dates back to the 13th century, the period of Mongol invasion. The first part tells the story of Vladimir and Suzdal great Prince George (Yuri) Vsevolodovich, who was killed during the battle with the troops of Batu Khan. According to historians, the legend of Kitezh was based on real historical events. The second part of the book contains a philosophical account of the vanished city of Kitezh, which is devoid of historical background and dates back to the apocryphal texts that tell of the “earthy Paradise”. Sacred city of Kitezh was a symbol of the place where the righteous dwelled, so the Lord has hit it during the invasion of Batu Khan. “And this city of Great Kitezh became invisible and protected by the hand of God”. The city of Kitezh is not available the proud, selfish, depraved, deceitful people. Anyone who wants to get into the city of Kitezh, must “flee the world and its sweetness”. The choice of life path and path to the city of Kitezh is a matter of free will, and a person who doesn’t wish to obtain salvation, is not compelled by the Lord. Thus, this text is an example of folk art, which contains a guide to spiritual self-development.

Original phenomenon in the history of the Orthodox Church has become a special area of theology, which received a name of Hesychasm. The name “Hesychasm” comes from the Greek word, it means “quietness”, “vow of silence”. Hesychasm was a unique phenomenon created by Byzantine monastic practice as a spiritual experience of monastic life mount Athos. Hesychasm sought to the mystical knowledge of God, divine energy, divine light. The ideology of Hesychasm inspired texts of Pseudo-Dionysius the Areopagite (circa 6th century) “The divine names”, “Concerning mystical theology”, “Celestial hierarchy”, “Concerning the ecclesiastical hierarchy”, which reflected the tradition of apophatic (negative) theology. This theology comes from the doctrine of unconditional uncertainty of God, the possibility of knowledge of God only by analogies. According to this method, good cause can be expressed by the words many and few, but also by full and absolute absence of words. Apothatic negative theology seeks to express the essence of God by denying all possible definitions as commensurate with its nature. The social role of the Byzantine Hesychasm was associated with increased ritual forms in Eastern Christianity. Hesychast Symeon the New Theologian (942-1022) substantiated the ideas of conscious penance as “the noetic” (prayer of silence), as well as the doctrine of “uncreated light”. Other followers of this doctrine were Gregory the Sinaite (died in 1346), who developed the ideology of “The cell of Hesychasm” and Gregory Palamas (died in 1358), who defended the Athonite mysticism on the Church Councils in 1347 and 1351, and he has made its proclamation of the official ideology of the Byzantine Empire. Hesychasm has spread in Russia thanks to the activities of the Kiev metropolitan Cyprian (1330-1406). Hesychasm in Russia was transformed in such branch as non-possessiveness, it has become a trend in Church life, which insisted on austerity as a way of spiritual self-development. The non-possessors were opposed to Josephits, headed by already known to us Joseph Volotsky, in the ecclesiastical controversy. Nil Sorsky became the leader of non-possessors (before the dignity his name was Nikita Maykov, 1433-1508). The non-possessors insisted that the clergy should lead the ascetic lifestyle, to live at the expense of the results of their own work and not rely on gifts and charity. His disciple Vassian Patrikeev (circa 1470 – after 1531) advocated the secularization of monastic lands (but not lands of community churches). The non-possessors was considered as a luxury even the decoration of the churches, much-loved by Russian society, and insisted on the austerity of the Church’s life. At the Church Council of 1503 Nil Sorsky put forward the project of secularization of monastic lands, directed by the spirit of all his teachings. However, the majority, represented by Josephites, did not support this project. Their leader, Joseph Volotsky, insisted that the church authorities should be rich and politically influential, and for this purpose it was necessary to project its property interests. Another author of the ideology of the Moscow autocracy, already known to us Philotheus of Pskov, supported Josephits in the controversy with non-possessors. Joseph Volotsky was known not only as the enemy of non-possessors and ideologist of Moscow’s autocracy, but also as an accuser of heresy. Russian heresies themselves were significant for understanding of the nature of the development of Russian religious thought. For example, the heresy of Judasiers, which was accused by Joseph Volotsky, was an attempt of theological alloy of Orthodoxy, Judaism and elements of the old Slavic paganism. Spiritual quest of this kind showed, obviously, a quality that Dostoevsky later called “the world responsiveness of the Russian soul”. If in Europe the Reformation and renewal of worship expressed the interests of the masses, in Russia, on the contrary, religious reforms faced resistance from conservative people and some of the clergy. These varied themes of Russian religious thought were popular in the Russian society, as evidenced by handwritten copies of old texts, which were created until the 18th century.

In the 19th century arose the phenomenon of the Russian Religious Renaissance, in the center of which there was the philosophy of all-unity by V.S. Solovyov (1853-1900). The book “Philosophical Principles of Integral knowledge” is the theoretical core of the philosophy of Vladimir Solovyov. Solovyov considers development similar to Hegel’s dialectics: as the removal of contradictory unity of opposites in a qualitatively new form of synthesis of thesis and antithesis. From his point of view infinite development is meaningless, because development involves a starting point and ultimate goal (from Divine creation to all-unity of souls in God). Solovyov identifies three stages of development: 1) the unity of the elements in the mix; 2) selection of elements and their inconsistency; 3) inner synthetic unity. Solovyov uses the analogy between humanity and an organism that has parts (the Nations) and the forms of existence that are common to all: feeling, thinking, willing. Each of these forms of beings has a personal and a public side. They become human when they are implemented in society. Universal feeling is the subject of objective beauty, thinking is objective truth, and the will is objective good. The first and the most important attitude of public life is the will which is determined by three factors. 1) People’s attitude towards nature generates the economy, which has material value to humans. 2) The attitude of people to interaction with each other creates a state that has a formal meaning. 3) The attitude of people to the Absolute is determined by the character of the person who reports the full and eternal existence. This objective forms the highest spiritual union – the church. (There isn’t any referring to some real historical church). The next most important attitude of public life, thinking (knowledge) also has three components that are arranged in hierarchy from the lowest to the highest one. 1) Positive science, which studies the real facts, deals with material truth. 2) Philosophy, which deals with the formal-logical truth, the idea. 3) Theology, the knowledge that has such object as absolute reality, God. These three components are not being challenged and not shooting each other, but without the highest justification, theology, science would deal with an empty form. The third most important attitude of public life, feeling (sense) also consists of three components. 1) Technical arts, based on external nature. 2) Fine arts. 3) Mysticism, which deals with true beauty of the transcendental world. Mysticism is a direct connection of our spirit to the transcendental world. Mysticism in human life is related to the life divine. From the point of view of Solovyev, human organization progresses, and as the development and strengthening of the spiritual forces of mankind is approaching the kingdom of Heaven on Earth. Then the upper stage is connected with the lower stages of corresponding sphere. A combination of mysticism, fine arts and technical arts generates Theurgy, mystical purpose of which is communication with the higher world through creative activity. From the unity of theology, philosophy and science occurs theosophy as integral knowledge. From the unity of the Church, the state and the economy occurs theocracy, where the Church does not interfere in economic and state affairs, but gives the state and the economy the ultimate goal. Unity of free Theurgy, free Theosophy and free Theocracy forms the kingdom of Cod on Earth.

The desire to find a way to achieve the kingdom of God on Earth has always been characteristic of Russian religious thought, but the late 19th-early 20th century gave the highest number of steps for approximation. For example, the philosophy of all-unity by Solovyov continued in religious philosophy and sophiology of P. Florensky and S. Bulgakov, in the social philosophy of freedom of N.A. Berdyev, philosophical ideas of the poets-symbolists A.Bely, V. I. Ivanov, D. S. Merezhkovsky. Russian cosmism tried to find special way to the kingdom of God. K.E. Tsiolkovsky and N. F. Fedorov sought to bring the kingdom of God in the material world by the scientific and technical means and space technologies. Even Russian revolutionary Marxism, despite its atheistic nature, actively sought to bring about the kingdom of God on Earth in the form of communism.

The Solovyov’s doctrine about Sophia as the wisdom of God was continued by S.N. Bulgakov (1871-1944). His fundamental works are “Philosophy of economy”, “The unfading light”, “The Tragedy of philosophy”. In the book “The tragedy of philosophy” Bulgakov formulates the link between religion and philosophy. He rejects the medieval formula according to which philosophy is the handmaiden of theology and approves the formula of philosophy as handmaiden of religion. From his point of view, there are two ways of religious self-determination: the theism which finds its completion in Christianity, and pantheism, which finds its expression in the religion of the man-God and anti-Christianity. Bulgakov argued that the example of the second type of self-determination, when the priority of the human prevails over the Divine, in his time was embodied in the ideas of socialism and Marxism. Bulgakov distinguishes between three ways to know God: abstract thinking, mystical introspection and religious revelation. The first two ways get proper value only with the third one, but separately they are false. Inspired by these ideas, he creates the teaching of divine wisdom, Sophia, which is called sophiology. Bulgakov talks about the Divine Sophia as the feminine part of the nature of the Holy Trinity. What is the purpose of the divine Sophia? Bulgakov finds several answers to this question. First, the Divine Sophia takes place between God and the world, between Creator and creature. Secondly, since Sophia accepts her existence from God the Father, so she is a creation and a daughter of God. But, as Sophia learns the Divine Logos (Christ) and she is known to him, so she is the bride of God the Son. As Sophia receives the outpouring of the gifts of the Holy Spirit, she is the Church, and thus, she is simultaneously the Mother of Christ. Sophia is also the perfect soul of the created world, so she is the sense of beauty. On the base of these speculative assumptions, Bulgakov insists that the Divine Sophia must be recognized as the fourth hypostasis of God, as a new part of Holy Trinity. It should be noted that the Russian Orthodox Church wasn’t in hurry to take into consideration the theological reflections of Bulgakov.

М., 1993. С.104-108.

P.N. Florensky (1882-1937) also developed the philosophy of all-unity and the doctrine of the divine Sophia as God’s wisdom. His main philosophical and theological work was “The pillar and the ground of the truth”. The basic idea of metaphysics by Florensky was that created persons were parts of the world, coexisted in a condition of all-unity. From his point of view, friendship and love are impossible without divine power, because we can love only in God and through God, as the basic condition of love is overcoming of selfishness and entry into new areas of being. The manifestation of love and self-awareness on metaphysical level he called the theory of consubstantiality, as the unity of the human souls outside the physical world. Florensky also considered divine Sophia as the fourth hypostasis. Considering the divine Sophia as the three hypostases, Florensky gave her certain characteristics. Firstly, divine Sophia is an ideal substance of creation. Secondly, divine Sophia is the mind of creature, its meaning and truth. Thirdly, divine Sophia is the spirituality of the creature, its holiness and purity, so, it is the beauty. He identified the divine Sophia as a creaturely nature, perceived by the Divine Word (Jesus Christ). In this sense, the divine Sophia is defined as the Church in its heavenly aspect. This range of these topics made Florensky’s philosophy.

Philosophy of all-unity was also reflected in the philosophy of history by N.A. Berdyaev (1874-1948). Berdyaev analyzed the meaning of history in his work “Philosophy of freedom” (1911). Berdyaev’s philosophy is built around the opposition between spirit and nature. From his point of view, the Deity is larger than the limits of the natural world and can reveal itself only symbolically. The real symbolism of Berdyaev reveals as the natural understanding of reality with regard to its supernatural value. Berdyaev distinguishes here kinds of freedom: 1) the primary irrational freedom, i.e. arbitrariness; 2) rational freedom, that is the fulfillment of moral obligation; 3) freedom, imbued with the love of God. Irrational human freedom is rooted in nothingness, which is not emptiness. It was the primary principle from which God created the world. This principle can be described as groundlessness. The Holy Trinity was born of the groundlessness, and then God the Father created the world. Freedom is also rooted in the groundlessness. So God is not responsible for freedom, and freedom of the human will can be directed toward good and toward evil. God helps to direct human will toward the good. However, the pride of the human spirit and the desire to be in the place of God leads to the situation when irrational freedom violates the hierarchy of being. It leads to slavery instead of freedom. The second freedom, a rational freedom, obeys the law and leads to compulsory virtue, so it leads toward slavery again. Only tragic appearance can resolve this situation. The second Divine act towards man is this: God reveals himself not as the Creator but as the suffering Redeemer. Berdyaev argues that the Divine crucifixion on the cross must conquer the vicious freedom through education it from the inside, without violence and without rejection of the created world of freedom. Climbing to the third kind of freedom, imbued with the love of God, which implies human love to God, it cannot be achieved by forcibly. Thus, Berdyaev argues that Christianity is the religion of freedom. In the books “The Fate of Man” and “The sense of Creativity” Berdyaev develops the creative philosophy of Christian anthropology, which assumes that man is like God because man is the Creator, and creativity is the emergence of existence from non-existence. Berdyaev defines three elements of creativity: 1) freedom; 2) the element of the gift, the talent, which comes from God; 2) created a world in which man lives and finds material for creativity. Creative activity has got two sides: its turning towards God and its turning towards the creative world. This duality manifests itself as fatal mismatch between the intensity of the creative act and the extensity of its result. Creativity as a manifestation of freedom should be a freedom for good. Berdyaev believes that there are two creative ways to save the world from evil: the path of the active creativity, exemplified by Pushkin, and a way of escape from the world as way of Holy hermits. From the perspective of Berdyaev, Christianity throughout its history ran from evil instead of active opposition to it. Berdyaev believes that the meaning of history can be found in the active creative transformation of the world for the love of God and for the goodness. Thus, Berdyaev philosophy of history has got transcendental and immanent character at the same time, because the meaning of history lies outside its events.

Russian cosmism became the most paradoxical manifestation of Russian religious thought. Cosmism tried to find a way for the building of the Kingdom of God in the material world. Representatives of cosmism believed in the future happiness of all mankind, founded on technical excellence and moral progress. N.F. Fedorov (1829-1903), the author of “philosophy of common cause”, considered that was unfair that a comfortable existence would accrue only to future generations. He believed that people, based on feelings of brotherhood and love, would create the technical means to resurrect all who once lived. Happiness of all generations of mankind in a new advanced society would be fair, and this universal happiness could be called the kingdom of God in the material world. Another famous representative of Russian cosmism, K.E. Tsiolkovsky (1857-1935), also believed that the happiness of mankind would be achieved by technical means. He believed that happiness of growing humanity needed more and more areas, so people needed to explore space and make it comfortable for equitable human society. He was convinced of the possibility of attaining “eternal bliss” as a result of technical progress. His books “Calculations and formulas relating related to the issue of interplanetary communications. The question of eternal bliss” and “The living Universe” look utopian. At first glance, the whole ideology of Russian cosmism looked utopian and dreamy, but that philosophical current has formed a scientific direction, which has allowed humankind to master space travel.

Please read the passage of utopian text by Tsiolkovsky about the future of humanity and the Universe and translate it into English:

Religious anarchism of Leo Tolstoy (1828-1910) was special too. Tolstoy on the basis of the revision of the Gospel texts denied such social institutions as marriage, government, army, court, Church. Formation of his philosophical worldview occurred in the 40-60s of the 19th century. In the diaries, notes “About the purpose of philosophy” (1847) he defined the central issues in his work: the nature and meaning of life, their causality of natural and social circumstances, as well as the unity of the divine and human in any of the individuals. In the “Epilogue” to the novel “War and Peace” Tolstoy formulates the concept of the philosophy of history, which criticizes the theory of the decisive role of prominent personalities, culture and education. In his opinion, history is the life of Nations and humanity as a whole, the clash of freedom and necessity, complex web of human interests. From the point of view of Tolstoy, the spontaneous action of the masses is implemented by a providential course of historical events. In the late 70s-80s of the 19th century Tolstoy creates a number of religious – philosophical works: “Confessions”, “What is my faith?”, “The kingdom of God is within us”, “About life” and others. He criticizes the varieties of hedonism and utilitarianism in ethics and encourages the transition from a morality of selfishness to morality of good and benefit to all. Special emphasis Tolstoy makes to the Gospel commandments. Since the late 80s the doctrine of Leo Tolstoy was formed as a religious and social movement. In the philosophical – encyclopedic works “Reading Circle”, “Way of life” he comes to the idea of a unified world in which natural, rational and moral principles form the harmony. In his works “Critique of dogmatic theology”, “The connection and translation of the four Gospels” Tolstoy proves that God is a love of life, a harmonious unity of matter and spirit, universal and eternal integrity. The main idea of Tolstoy’s religious and ethical concepts is a doctrine of non-violence. The moral aspect of non-violence means the improvement of society, which occurs through love. Tolstoy manifests anarchic sentiment towards the state, Church, army, courts and other social institutions, which are, in his opinion, a tool of violence against individuals and society. He argues that the existence of Church and state is contrary to the spirit of Christian teaching. Withdrawal from participation in state violence – military, judicial, ideological and other is a powerful means of improving society. Thus, Leo Tolstoy made a peculiar revolution of spirit. He believed that the ethics of non-resistance to evil could allow for moral progress of each individual, therefore, government-funded and other social institutions would became unnecessary.

Please read the passage from the text of Tolstoy and translate it into English:

So, we can see that the Russian religious philosophy had many forms and directions, although in some way it related to the problems of Orthodox theology. Thus, Russian philosophy was full of tragic feeling of the being.
