At the Airport

Read and translate.

When preparing to fly, passengers are requested to arrive at the airport 2 hours before departure time. They must register their tickets, get a seat assignment, and weigh and check their luggage.

Most airlines have at least 2 classes of travel, first class and economy class. Economy class tickets are much less expensive. Each passenger more than 2 years old gets a free luggage allowance. Generally this weight limit is 20 kg of checked baggage for economy class passengers and 30 kg for first class passengers. If you check excess luggage you’ll have to pay a fee calculated by the number of extra pieces and the extra weight. Every passenger is also allowed one small carry-on bag, for instance a laptop computer or small suitcase.

The rules for passengers who are traveling abroad are similar in most countries but there are, sometimes, slight differences. Here are some things to remember: if, for instance, you need to go through Customs, try to fill in the customs declaration before you talk to the customs officer. He will ask every passenger the same, routine questions about whether he is carrying anything he wants to declare: like tobacco, alcohol, presents, and sums of money.

At the check-in counter, your ticket is looked at, your things are weighed and labeled with their destination. The next formality is filling in the immigration form and going through passport control. Remember to have a black or blue pen with you because the immigration form has to be filled in block letters. You write your name, nationality, permanent address and the purpose of your trip. In most countries there is also a security check when your carry-on-luggage is inspected.

After fulfilling all these formalities you go to the departure lounge where you can have a snack, read a paper or buy something in the duty-free shop and wait for the announcement to board the plane.

When you arrive at your destination, some of these same formalities will undoubtedly be repeated. Often while on board the plane you will be given a customs declaration and immigration form to fill in. At the airport you may be met by a specially trained dog whose job it is to make sure that no passengers are carrying any illegal drugs. In addition, the immigration officer might want to inspect your visa, your invitation and even your return ticket.

Tourism is one of the biggest businesses in the world. There are nearly 800 million international tourist arrivals every year. It employs, directly or indirectly, one in fifteen of all workers worldwide, from A to Z, from airport cleaners to zookeepers, and includes bar staff, flight attendants, tour guides, and resort reps. It is a huge part of the economy of many countries – in countries such as the Bahamas, over 60 % of the economy is based on tourism.

Tourism is a fast - growing business. When Thomas Cook organized his first excursion from Leicester to Loughborough in 1841, he probably didn’t know what he was starting. Key developments in the last 150 years or so have led to the rise of mass tourism. There have been technological developments in transport, in particular the appearance of air travel and charter flights. There have been changes in working practices, with workers getting paid holiday time and working shorter and more flexible hours.

In recent years we have seen the growth of the Internet and globalization making the world seem a smaller but very fascinating place. The tourism industry grows faster and faster each year. In 1950, there were 25 million international tourists’ arrivals. In 2004, the figure was 760 million, and by 2020 it is predicted to be 1.6 billion.

But what are the challenges today? The tourism industry is affected by many different things: international events, economic change, changes in fashion. New concerns and worries appear every year, for example as people become more worried about security and international terrorism or as the value of their currency changes. But new destinations and new sources of tourists also seem to emerge every year.

Tourism survives. It is a powerful and sometimes dangerous force in the modern world. Tourism creates many good jobs and careers, but it also produces many poor and badly paid jobs. Tourism can help to protect environments and animal life, but it can also damage them. Tourism can save cultures and the local way of life, but it can also change them for the worse.

Tourism is one of the biggest industries in the world. It is perhaps also the most important.

Hotel Facilities

Read and translate.

The Oriental in Bangkok is named as one of the top three hotels in the world. Its 394 rooms are spacious and tastefully decorated. All have private bathroom, air-conditioning, hair-drier, TV with in-house movies, and mini-bar. Guests have a choice of seven restaurants including the ‘Normandie Grill’ for French cuisine, the ‘Lord Jim' for seafood, and the ‘Sala Rim Nam’, which serves exotic Thai cuisine.

The hotel has two swimming-pools, and across the river is the Oriental's fully-equipped sports complex which offers tennis and squash facilities, a gymnasium, a sauna, a jogging track, and a fitness centre. There is entertainment most evenings, including a regular disco.

The informal Argao Beach Club Hotel is the perfect place for a 'get-away-from-it-all' holiday. It is hidden in a coconut grove on the beautiful Dalguete coastline in the Philippines. The white coral beach stretches for 2 km and the hotel's three coves have crystal-clear waters, rich in tropical marine life.

The hotel restaurant overlooks the sea and offers both native seafood specialities and a high standard of international cuisine. The hotel's 135 bedrooms are simply furnished with separate shower and WC, air-conditioning, and patio. A full range of watersports is available. There are also tennis courts, a games room, a sauna, and a jacuzzi.

There is local entertainment with occasional floorshows, and a disco.

Enquiries and Reservations

Read and translate.

As you know, a receptionist works in one of the "front offices" by the front hall or lobby of a hotel. Usually, all members of staff who work in these offices have direct personal or telephone contact with the guests. In a large hotel, the receptionist welcomes and registers the guests. What about in a small hotel? Here the work of the receptionist may also include the job of advance reservations clerk, enquiry clerk, and book-keeper.

The advance reservations clerk deals with reservations enquiries, of course, and with the booking and allocation of accommodation. A hotel receives reservation requests in different ways. For example, telephone bookings are the most common in many hotels. This is because these bookings are quick and it is possible to get full information from the customer. Hotels often ask people who make reservations by telephone to confirm their bookings in writing.

In many countries reservations by telegram are less important than email reservations. Why is this? Because the email is fast and the confirmation is made immediately.

Perhaps you have seen that a number of hotels now have computer terminals. These hotels can link their reservation systems with other hotels in their group, with airline seat reservation systems and with terminals in the offices of important travel agents.

If a hotel is able to accept a booking the reservations clerk must record it. The reservations clerk normally completes a reservation form and enters the information in a reservation diary.
