Check in and boarding

When to arrive. Check your ticket or contact your airline for advice on checking-in times. The following times provide a general guide.

Long-haul flights: check-in opens four hours prior to scheduled departure

International flights: check-in three hours before scheduled departure

Domestic flights: check-in two hours prior to scheduled departure

Where to go. To find your check-in desk, look at the flight information screens at the entrances to the terminals.

At the check-in counter, your ticket will be looked at, your things will be weighed and labeled with their destination. You will be required to present a valid passport and any other documentation for travel. You will be issued with your boarding pass and will then be required to make your way to the Security.

Online check-in. Alternatively, you may be able to use online check-in. Lots of airlines offer online check-in from two to 24 hours before departure. You will be able to choose your seat (window, middle or aisle) and print your boarding card from your PC – and when you get to the airport, simply take your baggage to the bag drop facility.

Baggage restrictions. At some airports (for example, London Gatwick airport) you are allowed just one piece of hand luggage and this must not exceed 56cm x 45cm x 25cm. Your hand luggage must not contain any sharp items. You may only carry small amounts of liquid (in containers no bigger than 100ml) – and all these items must be inside one transparent re-sealable bag. Medicines also can’t exceed the 100ml maximum, and must be kept in a transparent, re-sealable bag but there’s no limit for powder or pills.

You are allowed to carry greater quantities of liquids – but you should put these in your hold luggage. There are several items that you are allowed to carry in hold luggage that you are not allowed to carry onboard with you in your hand luggage. These include: liquids, creams, gels and pastes in containers over 100ml; scissors; razor blades; knives with blades of any length; hypodermic needles (unless required for medical reasons, for which proof will be required); toy guns (metal or plastic) and some other items.

Prohibited items. There are some items that you’re not allowed to take on your aircraft in either your hand baggage or your hold luggage. These include: flammable liquids and solids; tear gas devices; infectious substances such as live virus materials; instruments containing mercury; poisons; radioactive materials and some other items.

You should also bear in mind the weight of your bags, checking weight allowances on your ticket or with your airline. Each passenger more than 2 years old gets a free luggage allowance. Generally, this weight limit is 20 kg of checked baggage for economy class passengers and 30 kg for first class passengers. If you check excess luggage you’ll have to pay a fee calculated by the number of extra pieces and the extra weight.

Security. Once you have successfully checked-in for you flight, you can then make your way to the Security area. At Security, passengers will be required to place all hand baggage and any loose items in the trays. Any metal objects or jewellery should also be placed in the trays. The trays will then be put through the x-ray machines and scanned for any illegal objects or substances. Passengers will also be required to walk through the scanner before collecting there hand luggage and belonging from the trays on the other side. Any sharp objects or liquids exceeding the allowed amount will be confiscated.

Customs. The customs officer will ask every passenger the same, routine questions about whether he is carrying anything he wants to declare. When departing from Russia, you must declare the following:

1. Amounts of cash exceeding USD 10,000 (if you plan to leave the country with this money).

2. Items of particular value, including jewellery, artwork, or antiques.

3. Musical instruments.

4. Goods with a value exceeding EUR 2,000 and weighing over 35 kg.

5. Weapons and drugs.

5. Alcohol over 2 litres.

6. Tobacco (more than 50 cigars, 200 cigarettes, or 250 g of pipe tobacco).

Tourists normally have nothing to declare. If you have something to declare, you will need to fill out a customs declaration form.

Passport control, sometimes known as border control, is typically found at airports where travelers may enter or leave a country. Employees of a government's immigration department known as passport control officers review the travel documents presented by travelers to make sure that those who are leaving the country have appropriate documentation. Departing passengers have to present a valid passport at the passport control counter. The presented document should not expire before the return journey. Note that some destinations require a passport validity of 6 months to enter their country.

Departure lounge. After fulfilling all these formalities, you will go to the departure lounge where you can have a snack, read a paper or buy something in the duty-free shop and wait for the announcement to board the plane.

Boarding. Information screens in the departure lounge show flights, boarding times and gate numbers. Check boarding pass or the flight information monitor and go to the appropriate boarding gate for boarding. Boarding usually begins around 45-30 minutes before departure and ends 10 minutes before actual departure, so take caution not to be late. Please note that at some airports no flight calls are made, so watch the screens closely.
